MBA applicants are often confused between CMAT score and CMAT percentile. MBA colleges shortlist candidates on the basis of CMAT percentile, but how is CMAT percentile calculated from the score? There is a huge difference between the two. In this article, we will discuss CMAT score vs percentile and how to calculate both. Given below are the five important questions on CMAT score vs CMAT percentile that we will answer in this article:

  1. What is CMAT score?
  2. How is CMAT score calculated?
  3. How is CMAT rank allotted?
  4. What is CMAT percentile?
  5. How to calculate CMAT percentile?
Q:   What is the CMAT 2025 cut off release date?
A:

CMAT cut offs are not released on a particular date. Since, the NTA does not conduct any counselling or selection process on behalf of the CMAT accepting colleges, there is no one date when the cut offs are released. The NTA announces CMAT result and after that the participating institutes release their CMAT cut offs, MBA Admission criteria individually. The cut offs vary for each college and is determined by the admission cell. The NTA has no role in cut off determination. So, candidates who have appeared for the CMAT exam can check the websites of their target colleges for admission criteria and cut offs. Most of the colleges have already published their admission criteria for 2024-2025 batch. You can check this page for CMAT cut offs: https://www.shiksha.com/mba/cmat-exam-cutoff.

Q:   What is the CMAT cutoff for JBIMS via OBC NCL category?
A:

One of the most respected business schools in India is the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) located in Mumbai. The cutoff of the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) for the category of OBC NCL (Other Backward Classes Non-Creamy Layer) is usually high because admissions are highly competitive.

For OBC NCL category, the anticipated CMAT cutoff percentile of JBIMS is about 99.81 percentile. The high cutoff indicates the stringent selection process and the high quality of education maintained by the institution. It is to be noted that the cutoff can fluctuate marginally every year depending upon the number of candidates, the difficulty level of the test, and the performance level of the candidates as a whole.

JBIMS does not officially declare category-wise cutoffs for CMAT, but the overall trend suggests that candidates must score very high to get admitted. The institute also takes into account other aspects like academic performance, work experience, and performance in the group discussion and personal interview rounds.

In conclusion, to gain admission to JBIMS under OBC NCL category via CMAT, striving for a percentile of approximately 99.81 or more is recommended. This will enhance your prospects of being above the cutoff and moving forward to the next rounds of selection.

Q:   How many mock tests to attempt to score 99 percentile in CMAT?
A:
There is no particular number of CMAT mock test that you should target to solve during your preparation phase but on an average it has been seen that about 30-40 CMAT mock tests are good enough to score 99 percentile. Candidates must start solving CMAT mock tests after completing the syllabus as it will help them gauge which are the topics that they have understood well and which are the topics that require more work. 30-34 CMAT mock tests are recommended as, CMAT exam is all about speed and accuracy. The more questions you'll solve in an exam environment, the better you'll get at understanding, choosing and solving questions faster and correctly. Important point to note about practicing CMAT mock test is that one should analyse every mock test to understand the gaps and fissures and what to do to fill them. Another aspect to keep in mind is not to overdo it. When you start to score 98-99 percentile in CMAT mock tests consistently then you should stop and focus on revision, etc.

CMAT Score Calculation Example:

Suppose in the Quantitative Technique and Data Interpretation section you attempted 15 questions out 20. Out of 15, 10 answers were right and 5 were wrong. So, your score in Logical Reasoning section will be 10x4-5 = 35. So out of 80 marks in this section, your score is 35.

You can calculate the score of each section in the similar manner and make an estimation of your overall CMAT score by adding them together.

How is CMAT Percentile Calculated?

CMAT percentile is calculated on the basis of the rank of the student vs number of students who appeared in CMAT. For this, the formula given below is applied:

Formula to Calculate CMAT Percentile, prescribed by NTA is given below:

Percentile P = 100 x Number of candidates appeared in the examination with raw marks equal to or less than the candidate/Total number of candidates appeared

For example, suppose 10,000 candidates appeared in CMAT exam. And candidate A has got No.1 Rank. His CMAT percentile score will be: 100 x 9999/10,000= 99.99

You can also calculate the rank with the below given formula:

Percentile (P)= 10,000 – 1(rank)/10,000 x 100= 99.99.

CMAT scoring process

Similarly, if a person has scored rank 3, his/her percentile will be 99.97.

For example, one candidate scored 100 percentile out of 54,516 candidates who appeared in the exam. Five candidates scored 99.99 percentile. One student scored 372 marks in total to obtain 100 percentile.

Another example: In one session, three candidates scored 100 percentile out of 64,448. On candidate secured AIR 1 with 341 marks. Two other candidates scored 335 marks so they were ranked AIR 2. However, the CMAT percentile score of all the three was 100, which means CMAT ranks are based on total score obtained and not the percentile score.
