In this article, we will discuss CMAT score vs percentile and how to calculate both. Given below are the five important questions on CMAT score vs CMAT percentile that we will answer in this article:

  2. How is CMAT score calculated?
  3. How is CMAT rank allotted?
  4. What is CMAT percentile?
  5. How to calculate CMAT percentile?

What is CMAT Score?

CMAT is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the CMAT result is announced in the form of the total score, percentile score and all India ranks. CMAT score is the sum total of marks obtained by the candidate in each section of the CMAT question paper. Candidates are given marks in each section separately which are then totalled to arrive at CMAT Total Score (out of 400).

How is CMAT Score Calculated?

CMAT score is calculated by scoring the candidates on each question. Given below is the marking scheme of CMAT 2023:

  • For each correct answer 4 marks will be allotted
  • For each incorrect answer -1 mark will be deducted
  • There is no negative marking for unanswered question
  • The total score will be calculated by totaling marks gained or lost in each question

The CMAT question paper carries 100 questions, equally divided into four sections. Total marks allotted in 400. Take a look at CMAT marking scheme below:

CMAT sections

Number of questions

Marks allotted

Quantitative Technique and Data Interpretation

20

80

Logical Reasoning

20

80

Language Comprehension

20

80

General Awareness

20

80

Innovation & Entrepreneurship

20

80

Example:

Suppose in the Quantitative Technique and Data Interpretation section you attempted 15 questions out 20. Out of 15, 10 answers were right and 5 were wrong. So, your score in Logical Reasoning section will be 10x4-5 = 35. So out of 80 marks in this section, your score is 35.

You can calculate the score of each section in the similar manner and make an estimation of your overall CMAT score by adding them together.

How is CMAT Rank Allotted?

CMAT ranks are allotted on the basis of marks scored by a candidate. The candidate who scores most marks out of 400 among all CMAT test taker, he/she secures All India Rank 1. For example in CMAT 2018, Atul Nimish Kulkarni scored 341/400 and was declared AIR 1. In CMAT 2017, Saras Suhane scored 350/400 so he was ranked on top.

In case more than one candidate secures the same ranking, the same rank is assigned to all of them but are displayed in the CMAT rank list by sorting their names alphabetically. For example last year, the candidate who was ranked AIR 1 scored 341/400. Two candidates scored 335/400 and they were ranked AIR 2. The rank of the subsequent candidate is then extended by the number of additional students having the same rank. Eg: if three students get 25th Rank then the subsequent candidate will be ranked as 28th.

How is CMAT Percentile Calculated?

CMAT percentile is calculated on the basis of the rank of the student vs number of students who appeared in CMAT. For this, the formula given below is applied:

Formula to Calculate CMAT Percentile, prescribed by NTA is given below:

Percentile P = 100 x Number of candidates appeared in the examination with raw marks equal to or less than the candidate/Total number of candidates appeared

For example, suppose 10,000 candidates appeared in CMAT exam. And candidate A has got No.1 Rank. His CMAT percentile score will be: 100 x 9999/10,000= 99.99

You can also calculate the rank with the below given formula:

Percentile (P)= 10,000 – 1(rank)/10,000 x 100= 99.99.

CMAT scoring process

Similarly, if a person has scored rank 3, his/her percentile will be 99.97.

For example, one candidate scored 100 percentile out of 54,516 candidates who appeared in the exam. Five candidates scored 99.99 percentile. One student scored 372 marks in total to obtain 100 percentile.

Another example: In one session, three candidates scored 100 percentile out of 64,448. On canddidate secured AIR 1 with 341 marks. Two other candidates scored 335 marks so they were ranked AIR 2. However, the CMAT percentile score of all the three was 100, which means CMAT ranks are based on total score obtained and not the percentile score.
