Emerging Opportunities in Biotechnology and Genetics

Apart from the traditional role, an agriculture graduate has a better future in Biotechnology and Genetics.

Today, farmers are facing issues like climate change, limited land, diseases and pests. Agriculture biotechnology (Agri-biotech) and genetic engineering play a major role in modern agriculture. With the help of modern technology and genetic modification, scientists have developed high-yield, climate-resilient, and pest-resistant crops. Also, they have improved the quality of food security and sustainability with the help of technologies like CRISPR and GMOs.

How does Genetic Engineering in Agriculture Work?

Genetic engineering is the branch of Biotechnology. Scientists can directly modify the DNA of plants using genetic engineering in a shorter time.

Benefits of Agri-Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering

The benefits of agricultural biotechnology and genetic engineering are mentioned below.

Pest and Disease Resistance

The modified crops naturally resist insects, which result in less need for chemical pesticides.

Higher Crop Yields

GE modified crops can grow fast and produce more food on small land. This can help in meeting the global demand of food.

Reduce Chemical Usage

GE crops require fewer pesticides and herbicides to fight pests and diseases. This helps in environmentally friendly farming.

Fast Growth and Ripening

These types of crops grow fast resulting in multiple harvests annually and improved the productivity.

Drought and Climate Resilience

Crops engineered for drought-tolerance and salt-resistant can grow in harsh climates.

Example of Genetic Engineering Crops

  1. Bt Cotton
