BHU PhD Eligibility & Highlights 2025

BHU PhD course duration varies based on the selected course specialisation. It usually range from two to six years. All admissions to PhD programmes at Banaras Hindu University shall be through a national-level Research Eligibility Test (RET). So as to identify the scholastic capabilities and aptitude for research, there are three levels of this test as mentioned below:

Test A: To assess Logical and Analytical Capability
Test B: To assess Subject Knowledge Test
Test C: Research proposal and Personal Interview to test aptitude for research

Tests A and B take place on a single day at multiple centres across the country while Test C will take place at BHU in the concerned Department/School/Centre. Candidates who are exempted from appearing for Tests A and B (RET-exempt category), but would be required to qualify the Test C to become eligible for registration for PhD.

Law

A pass in one of the Master’s degrees with at least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying exam

In addition to being eligible for PhD, candidates seeking admission to BHU for PHD also need to be eligible for RET conducted by the university.

Q: Do I have to take an entrance exam to pursue a PhD in English Literature from BHU?

BHU offers Ph.D. courses in different subjects like Bengali, English Hindi Sanskrit, Mathematics etc. To be eligible for these courses, candidates need to have scored at least 55% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in the relevant subject at postgraduate level. Bhu conducts its entrance exam I. e BHU RET to select students for their Ph.D. courses. The selection of the student is based on the merit obtained in the BHU RET.

(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.
