B.S. in Physical Sciences + M.S. in Physical Sciences - Batch of 2028

An overview on IISER-K by an undergraduate student.
Placements: As an undergraduate student, I know less about the placements. But my goal is to complete the BSMS course and get a Ph.D. offer from a good university. Because even if the college has placements, the package is not so much. On average, you can get 6 to 7 LPA. And very few students are offered, actually. The roles are mainly researcher and teacher. Internship opportunities are easily available. But you've got to work for it; email the professors again and again. I haven't applied or am willing to apply in the first year so I really don't know about the projects and outcomes for now.
Infrastructure: The hostel facilities are good, but the rooms are a bit small (because they put 3 students in a double sharing room and 2 students in a single sharing room for the first 2 years). But things are clean. Bathrooms are not so clean but much cleaner than expected from a government college. Additionally, the mess is a little bit messy. Because of the two messes, only one is functional. The medical facility is really good, I have to say. And talking about sports. IISER-K is a golden place for sports lovers.
Faculty: The curriculum here is kind of open. Teachers decide the location of the course by observing students' status. You are welcome to question everything the teacher says (if you're not being annoying? ). The faculty members are good (not so good, if I remember my first semester). But in the second semester, the faculty members are amazing. You might be a little disappointed if your target is earth science, but it will be heaven for you if your target is physics, chemistry or biology. As this isn't an 'industry-based college, I won't say it makes students industry-ready. But it surely leaves a deep understanding of concepts in our minds. The pass percentage varies depending on the overall performance of the whole class. In the first semester, our average pass percentage was around 30–40%, but yes, scoring that many marks is harder than it seems.
Other: Personally, I most liked the nature of Iiser Kolkata. Far from the hustle of the city, it's made in a village, open fields, and a and a small forest. I can't say I particularly dislike anything, but the pace, of course, is a bit fast. Now, talk about campus life. Socially, Iser-K is very rich. There are many clubs and activities to participate in. Starting from music, drama, dance, chess, quizzes, movies, nature, science, math arts, literature, photography, spicmacay, and sports. Everything is there. Among extracurricular activities, there is drama, football, basketball, table tennis, lawn tennis, badminton, volleyball, kho-kho, cricket, etc. Most of these social groups are completely run by students.

The campus life is excellent.
Placements: Our college does not provide good placements. Many students go for higher studies abroad with very good scholarships. Students receive both national and internal recognition for their work.
Infrastructure: Our college hostels are excellent. Wi-Fi is available. Our classrooms and libraries are excellent. Refrigerators, washing machines, and geysers are available. Purified drinking water is provided. The quality of the food in the mess is excellent. Medical facilities are available.
Faculty: Our teachers are friendly and well-educated. The course curriculum is relevant. Students are engaged in many learning activities. Exams depend on professors. The concept of BSMS is a very good idea in India. It was introduced by this institution.
Other: It is an excellent course, and numerous activities are happening in various clubs consistently. Students are occupied with their lab work, but participation in these activities depends on the individual's preference.

I would recommend students to join this college.
Placements: Many students opt for higher studies. They pursue Ph.D. abroad. The remaining students prepare for civil services and other exams. It is a premium institute, and internships are also offered in this course.
Infrastructure: Laboratory is very good. We have two dining halls. We also have a basement where we get all essentials. Research complex is also available for integrated Ph.D. students. It also provides a decent library.
Faculty: I am very satisfied with this college. In the first year, er have all courses. In the second year, we have three courses. In the third year, we take only one subject as a major for which we do thesis work also. The weightage of marks is equally distributed throughout the semester.
Other: I chose this course as I wanted to pursue a major in Physics. Most of the students are aware of IISC Bangalore but few students know about IISER. BSMS is a five-year integrated degree.

The college has good and bad both.
Placements: IISER is not made for placement purpose. We have a placement department but still students prefer research over job so many of our seniors got admitted to very prestigious universities for Ph.D. but if you want to come here to get a dream job, then it's not your cup of tea.
Infrastructure: Hostels are quite good here, better than many national level institutes. They give one bed, one fan, one almirah and a pair of study table and chair. 24*7 light and water supply is there but the bad thing is that washrooms are not cleaned every day. You can find snakes in the bathrooms easily.
Faculty: If you are thinking that you will get some world's best teachers and scientists here, you will be disappointed like I am now. IISER Kolkata is very famous for its Physics department but I don't think that except for 2-3 there is any good professor or researcher. Very few are really dedicated.
Other: IISER KOLKATA is full of extracurricular activities, every week you will find something new, something different, something you have never seen in your life, a little India is living here. If I talk about my course, I am a Physics major, please if you want to take Maths as major or even as a pre major then think atleast 1000 times. They should reduce the number of courses, learning 9 courses in less than 5 months is very hectic and difficult. They should think about it.

Our college has very good infrastructure and facilities.
Placements: As this is a research institute, it gives good opportunities for higher studies like Ph.D in India and abroad but not for placements. Students can get placements if they are from DMS. Our college is a good place for students interested in research because they get hands-on experience from various labs.
Infrastructure: Our campus has all the required facilities with good infrastructure like a 24X7 library, computer center, etc. There are some drawbacks as it is far away from the city so students have to go to Kolkata if anything is needed.
Faculty: Professors are experts in their domain. The course curriculum is at par with other institutes. There is some flexibility as major subjects are not decided till 3rd year. So in the first year, students can get exposure to all subjects. Then they have to select any three of them for the second year and major subjects are decided in the 3rd year. Apart from that, students can take electives of the course from other departments.

Review of IISER Kolkata - Indian Institute of Science Education & Research.
Placements: From the whole batch, around 10-15% of students get placed in good companies. Most of the students who get placed are from the department of chemical sciences or department of biological sciences. Out of the very few who opt for jobs rather than higher studies or civil services, most of them get placed in well-off companies with a good package. This is before the establishment of the placements cell, with the founding of the placements cell recently, and the great tie-ups, placements, and packages will rise. For chemistry, placements are mostly in pharma laboratories in India like Dr. Reddy's. Physics students and others get placed in data analysis jobs with a variety of companies. Research roles in the industry are also a valid option after a BSMS degree.
Infrastructure: There are 3 hostels available for UG and PG students on the campus. The bigger rooms are double sharing or triple sharing while the smaller rooms are single sharing rooms. The hostels have common washrooms and are fitted with geysers and washing machines. The lecture hall complex has a 300 seater, and multiple smaller 100 seater rooms for other classes. The research complex has state-of-the-art research equipment and has a centralized air-conditioner. Sitting space is available for students working in an experimental laboratory and for students working in a theoretical laboratory, a well functioning, and well-equipped computer center is available. A second computer center is available with 150 computers fully functional and equipped with ubuntu. A massive library with 3 floors with access to journals and science magazines is also available to all the members. All the above facilities have Wi-Fi. The canteen is student monitored and instead of being assigned to a vendor, cooks are hired with raw materials brought from nearby places. Hence the canteen menu is diverse and delicious. Students can take any item they want from the menu, and just pay for that item using the mess card. A medical unit exists, but is not very well-equipped and well maintained.
Faculty: Teachers are top researchers in their fields and are also enthusiastic about teaching. The teaching quality however varies a lot and is also subject-dependent. However, the coursework is very rigorous and is very research-oriented. Some courses are industry-relevant, and with the establishment of the entrepreneurship cell, the inclusion of courses relevant to it has started. The semester exams demand high effort from the students.
Other: KVPY is a way to enter IISER Kolkata with a good scholarship of Rs, 5000 per month and Rs 20,000 yearly contingency which gets upgraded to 7,000 per month with Rs 28,000 annual contingency. Inspire fellowship with the same amount also is provided to a few students who do academically well.

Overall it is a good college and a great place to extend our limits.
Placements: Placements in the college are few as most students opt for higher studies. Few companies like ITC Infotech, TCS, etc., visit the campus for placements. The placement cell is increasing its base and hopefully, it will be able to invite more R&D companies. Chemistry branch has good placements, and many companies visit the campus for placements.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure of the college is very good. We even have a swimming pool on the campus. Classrooms are air-conditioned and huge. The entire campus is Wi-Fi enabled. Hostels are also spacious. There are a huge library and computer centre. Labs are well-equipped with all the necessary items. There is a dedicated research complex.
Faculty: Faculty members and the course curriculum are the best in class. Some faculty members are great in teaching, and some are not. There are very interdisciplinary courses. Thus each person is able to learn according to their choices. Humanities course are also included in the curriculum, thus making things complete.
Other: Grant event of the college is science fest. The college is away from the main city.
