IIT Kharagpur PhD Highlights 2024

IIT Kharagpur offers PhD courses to students at the doctoral level with a minimum and maximum duration of three and eight years, respectively. The area of research is available in 19 departments, 12 schools and 12 centres in the areas of Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture & Regional Planning, Humanities & Social Sciences, Rural Development, Law, Management and Medicine.

Offered in regular mode with institute assistantship, individual fellowship, sponsored and for working professionals, admission to PhD programme is recommended by the Departmental Academic Committee based on the overall academic performance of the candidates and written test followed by the interview. Additionally, the institute also offers a three-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship (PDF). Candidates must complete a master’s degree with a minimum of 60% aggregate in Engineering/ Science/ Commerce/ Management/ Law and/ or equivalent to apply for PhD courses.

You will have a great research life at IIT Kharagpur.

Placements: PhD deals with research in some particular areas of interest. You have to do intense research and publish technical papers. For PhD, the probability of getting direct recruitment through campus placements is less compared to other courses. You have to apply for jobs offline, mostly in the R&D department or to various colleges. Still, about 50% of the students are pursuing PhD to get jobs direct through campus placements. The salary package got by one of my friends was 30 LPA in Intel company. I didn't attend campus placements and joined as an assistant professor at NIT Rourkela.

Infrastructure: As it is a government-aided autonomous college, the hostels and building infrastructure may not be alluring and not of top quality. However, here you can meet students and faculty members from around the world. Hostel rooms are small and old. The food served in the mess is horrible. Still, you will enjoy the campus life with its greenery and by hanging out with friends. There is a huge collection of books in the library, and there are well-equipped laboratories. Wi-Fi is available everywhere on the campus, including the academic area, hostels and even on campus grounds. A health care centre available inside the campus provides basic medical services and may refer you to outside hospitals as per requirement. There is a huge gymkhana with almost all modern facilities inside the campus.

Faculty: Faculty members here are of top quality with immense knowledge of their specialised subjects. My mentor was really good, helpful and understanding. The course curriculum of B.Tech and M.Tech is industry-oriented and helps students to be ready for campus placements without much hassle or extra preparation.

Other: After pursuing my M.Tech from the same college, I chose to continue my PhD as I have enthusiasm for higher studies and research. I accepted the course when I was allotted to my favourite mentor. You will surely enjoy the campus life, its vibrant greenery, tea break at Chedi and evening snacks at Tikka. Here students will get complete freedom to learn, enjoy and explore.

I am satisfied with the experience and amenities this institution provides to students.

Placements: Almost 80-90% of the students got placements. Top recruiting companies are generally from the analytics domain. The institute not only provides placements but also assists in startups if a student is inclined to the business acumen. Some of the notable alumni of this college are Sundar Pichai, Arvind Kejriwal, Vinod Gupta and many others.

Infrastructure: It is a centrally Wi-Fi-enabled campus. It has a massive library and humongous classrooms, which make it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The total area of the campus is around 2500 acres, with a helipad and a gigantic stadium. The institute has several eating joints like Rooster, Cafe Coffee Day, Subway and Mio Amore. The institute also has a large movie theatre.

Faculty: Most of the students get into either higher studies, research, or industry. Faculty members make students ready to take up any challenge in life. The environment is competitive, and students have exposure to the best amenities and laboratories with respect to the subject.

Other: IIT Kharagpur holds the most awaited spring fest in January. It is one of the largest fests in India, with more than 30,000 footfalls.

Placements: It has one of the best placement across schools. A wide variety of profiles were offered by top firms across the country and it covered different industries involving finance, operations, Marketing and sales, consultancy, analytics etc. All the students were placed during the placement drive only.

Infrastructure: We had the state of the art facilities. Being a part of the IIT system, we had access to all the amenities of the system. There was a huge central library, along with a digital version of it as well. Also the Gymkhana was state of the art and we had a tech market as well.

Faculty: The faculty members were excellent. Their teaching process was brilliant, and it included both the theoretical and practical application of the same. Case study based teaching helped us particularly. The course curriculum was highly relevant to the industry standards and also is regularly updated.

Placements: Placements are great from companies like Samsung, Microsoft, Intel, Mercedes Benz, Eaton, TVS Motors, JIO, Flipkart etc. The highest salary packages offered are about 18-25 LPA. Scope for internships is great. Students manage to crack internships in companies like Schneider, Electric, Adobe, Mentor Graphics, and also academic internships in universities like University of Alberta, NTU Singapore, University of Colorado, Max Planck Institute, etc. They also get pre-placement offers from those companies, depending on their internship performance. The placement cell CDC plays a great role in providing internships and placements to the students.

Infrastructure: Facilities like Wi-Fi, labs, classrooms and library are very well-maintained and have a great infrastructure. Medical facilities are good, and immediate medical facilities are provided to students in BC Roy Hospital. Classrooms are very good, and labs are provided with all the important and required equipment.

Faculty: Teachers are highly qualified and knowledgeable. The course curriculum is useful. Industry exposure is moderate. Teaching quality and teaching methods are useful. The student to faculty ratio is fairly balanced. New faculty members are also recruited slowly and gradually.

Other: The college has numerous societies. Events and huge fests like Kshitij, Spring fest, etc., are organised in the college. Various extracurricular activities like music, dance, debate, elocution, sports, design, innovation, etc., are conducted. The campus life is fabulous. The campus crowd is great.

Placements: The placement scenario in IIT-KGP is on an average, although B.Tech placements are good. But for M.Tech, it is the worst. Only 40% students got placed in recent years, so they have only one option that is Ph.D or preparation for PSUs through GATE. Otherwise, software placements are also available. There are very few departments which get only 30% job in B.Tech, so it totally depends on the department and the current year situation. I want to give one example i.e. if one B.Tech pass out from here gets a job of 6 lakhs annually, then what is the difference between IIT and any college other than IIT.

Infrastructure: Infrastructure-wise, IIT-KGP is far better than any other institute. It is well-known that the central library is one of the best libraries in Asia. Hostel facilities are very good and there are 100-bed facilities with the B.C. Roy Technology Hospital. The entire campus is fully Wi-Fi connected. I want to say nothing about the food because West Bengal is famous for its food, so it is quite expected that food will be good and tasty. You can get everything within the campus and the price is also subsidised.

Faculty: The quality of faculty members is very high and impressive. Here the maximum teaching support is digital. Very motivated faculty members are there. They have a good idustrial connection both within India and outside. All classrooms are fully air-conditioned and digital. The course curriculum is as per any standard university.

Infrastructure: The infrastructure is really well built and well furnished. The campus includes well-built departments and gardens for amusement purposes. The central library is also well built. Everywhere one or more canteen is there, and they are also well built, and many trees are available. Even the presence of a swimming pool and gym is refreshing. The counselling centre is there to boost up students.

Faculty: Faculty members here are good, and they boost their students like anything. They help students to overcome every situation and barriers. They morally boost up. The course curriculum helps the students to qualify competitive examinations.

Other: The college has top ranking in India and outside India. Top class students take admission here. This college is famous for foreign exchange students and has contacts widely all over the world. It produces good researchers, and a lot of alumni from this college are into a good profession. Many famous personalities are from this college.
