GAT Topics for Design Entrance Exam
The General Ability Test is asked in all the design entrance exams, such as NID, NIFT, UCEED, CEED, etc. It checks overall knowledge, reasoning ability, language skills, and awareness of candidates. Students mainly focus only on drawing and creativity and skip GAT, but scoring well in GAT can improve the overall rank. The syllabus may vary slightly from one exam to another, but most design entrance exams include similar topics.
GAT stands for General Ability Test. It is usually a written examination consisting of objective questions. The paper tests how well a student can think logically, understand language, solve problems, and stay updated with current events.
NIFT Stage 1 has NIFT GAT, NID has NID DAT, IIT Bombay has UCEED and CEED, Symbiosis Institute of Design has SEED. All these institutions conduct the Design Entrance Exam, which consists of General Ability Test.

IIT Bombay will release the question paper for the UCEED 2027 exam alongside the draft answer key, a day or two after the conduct of the entrance exam. The candidate can download the question paper online.
NIFT 2026 exam analysis will be available soon after written exams are over.
Analysis will cover

Mock tests will include representative questions or questions similar to ones asked in NIFTEE. So, by taking mock tests, candidate will get to know about types of questions asked, marking scheme, weightage, etc. Another important benefit the candidate can draw from solving a sample paper is understanding the question paper layout. For instance, the candidate will know which questions are placed where, the sequence of questions, whether the candidate needs to complete one section before moving to the next, etc.
The Symbiosis Institute of Design (SID) doesn’t release any answer keys for the SEED exam. So, you will not find any official answers to the questions asked in the SEED entrance exam. That being said, there are some coaching institutes which may release the unofficial answers to the questions asked in the entrance exam.
The coaching institutes may also release sample papers with solutions. But note that to be able to download these materials, you will most likely have to pay a subscription fee.
Tips to prepare for GAT
Some of the tips that students can use to prepare for the General Ability Test for NIFT, NID, UCEED and CEED exams are given below.
- Make a Study Plan: Pay attention to all the sections equally. Plan and divide your day. Try to find your wear areas and then pay attention to those areas. All sections are important in GAT, be bit english, numerical, general knowledge, etc.
- Solve PYQs: Solving previous papers helps understand the exam pattern and important topics. These will help you to know the repeated questions, most asked questions, important topics, etc.
- Read Daily: Make a habit of reading daily. Learn at least 20-30 words daily. Reading newspapers, design magazines, and online articles improves both GK and English.
- Take Mock Tests: Mock tests improve speed, time management and confidence. It helps to face the real exam fear and helps in managing stress.
- Revise Regularly: Make notes and revise regularly what you have learned. Keep notes handy and clean.

IIT Bombay released question paper for the CEED exam. It can be downloaded online from CEED Website. Note that no login is required to download the question paper; simply click on the download link and you can download the paper in pdf form.
There are multiple benefits of solving sample papers of CEED. Some of them are given below:
The sample papers will contain questions similar to the ones that will be asked in the CEE exam. Or in other words, they will cover the same topics, weightage, and difficulty level.
Sample papers are useful for improving one’s problem-solving and time-management skills.
Question papers, meanwhile, will allow the candidate to check the types of questions asked in the previous edition of the exam, any specific trend followed, weightage given to various sections, etc.
Concept building is another area that can be honed by solving sample papers.
No, mock tests are not the same as CEED question or sample papers.
It is because the main purpose of the mock tests is to help the candidate get acquainted with the exam pattern and system, especially if the exam is conducted in an online mode. The mocks will allow the candidate get accustomed with the exam mode, navigation, scoring, and answering patterns. To some extent it also may help the candidate improve problem-solving and time-managment skills, which are typically the exclusive domain of CEED sample papers.
Additionally, mock tests are meant to be taken in the last few days of the exam. On the other hand, sample papers are typically solved even in the early stages of exam preparation.
UCEED question paper will have two parts. Part A will be online and Part B will be offline. Part A will include Numerical Answer Type, Multiple Select Question and Multiple Choice Question. Part B will have sketching and drawing questions.
