Shiksha spoke to Pramod Ranjan where he shared his NID exam prep strategy, success mantras, and a lot more. Go through the detailed interview below.
Q. What is your score and rank NID Entrance Exam?
The final score for NID admissions 2020 was calculated as per the formula mentioned here – 15% CDAT (Common Part to all Disciplines), 45% Discipline Specific DAT and 40% DAT Mains – due to Covid-19. My score and rank for the NID Entrance Exam are as mentioned below:
NID DAT Prelims (Strategic Design Management)
- Marks: 55.50/100
- Rank: 22 (General category)
NID DAT Mains (Strategic Design Management)
- Marks: 69.15/100
- Percentile Score: 93.24
- Rank: 5 (General category)
Q. Which coaching institute/classes did you join to prepare for NID DAT 2020?
I didn’t take any formal coaching. Earlier, in 2015, I joined a 10 days crash course for my Bachelor entrance exam from one of the leading design coaching centres in Ahmedabad. It was not a good experience and the faculty, as well as course material, was poor.
I would advise students to solve past years’ NID question papers and sample papers to prepare for NID Entrance Exam 2020.
Q. How long did you prepare for NID exam?
I tried to study for 1-2 hours, every day, for 1.5 months before the exam was scheduled to be conducted. My preparation mostly comprised of solve sample papers.
Q. Did you refer to any important books or study material for NID exam prep?
I didn’t refer to any study material as such, and just solved some sample papers.
Q. What mistakes should one avoid while giving NID exam in order to score well?
One should go through the question paper well and then distribute the time for each section and keep a few minutes extra in the last, to finish if anything remains. Firstly, one should address all general and skill-based questions and in the later part, one should finish problem-based questions. It is also to note that the problem-based questions do take longer time than others.
Q. Which as per you was the most difficult part of NID DAT exam 2020?
To keep the quality of sketching good and up to the expectations is the most difficult part, in that time of anxiety and pressure while appearing for NID exam 2020. Usually, NID DAT papers are lengthy as compared to the time allotted for the exam.
Q. Is there any section that plays the “deciding factor” for getting shortlisted in the exam?
There is no deciding factor as such in NID DAT Prelims. However, in NID DAT Mains, they really look at the aptitude of the person, their work and reason of pursuing masters. The interview is the main deciding phase, is what I think.
Q. How did you prepare for the NID Studio Test and Interview round?
We didn’t have any studio round due to Covid-19. For the interview round, I wanted to answer what is asked with complete honesty and share my journey so far, my current work and future plans/my vision, with the panel. Also, I wished not to get intimidated by anything and did not carry any preconceived notion.
Q. Which campus have you secured admission in?
I secured admission in MDes Strategic Design Management at NID Gandhinagar campus. But unfortunately, I had to decline it as I decided to take admission at IIT Delhi in MDes Industrial Design.

Both institutions offer the BDes course but with completely different admission processes. IIT Indore accepts admission based on the UCEED entrance exam, while BITS Pilani considers the NID Entrance exam/ BITSAT exam result.
See the table below to compare both insttutions on different factors:
| Institution | NIRF Ranking | Tuition Fee |
|---|---|---|
| BITS Pilani | 11 | ₹ 30.8L |
