If shortlisted, B.Des applicants need to appear in a Situation Test, while M.Des candidates need to take a personal interview. The Situation Test carries 20% weightage, whereas the Personal Interview carries 30% weightage. One of the most effective tools to prepare for the Situation Test/ PI is to solve previous years' question papers.
NIFT Situation Test 2026 - The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) will conduct the NIFT Situation Test in May 2026. The test will most likely be administered in offline mode for shortlisted candidates who have participated in the choice-filling process. The Situation Test will be held at various NIFT campuses.
In the case of MDes, MFM, and MFTech programs, shortlisted candidates have to appear in a NIFT Personal Interview, which will be conducted in May 2026 (tentative). The shortlisted candidates are required to participate in the NIFT campus selection and slot booking process for the Situation Test/ Personal Interviews.

Key Pointers about NIFT 2026 Situation Test
- Hands-on Test - The situation test is a hands-on test that will evaluate the candidate’s material handling skills and ability to come up with innovative ideas in a given situation with a given set of materials.
- Material: NIFT provides all necessary materials such as paper, glue, tape, and other crafting supplies. Candidates cannot bring their own materials.
- No additional material will be provided/ allowed. Candidates must use only the materials provided by NIFT during the test
- Model building - The candidate has to build a model with the given material, showcasing an innovative and creative bent of mind. The candidate must also have a good understanding of space visualization, color scheme, construction, and how to mix and match various components. All these parameters will be checked with the write-up explaining the concept behind the model constructed.
- The medium of instruction in NIFT 2026 will be English, so the write-up will be in English. If the NIFT write-up is in any other language, no marks will be allocated.
- Disqualification rule - Candidates trying to reveal their identity in any way, like by writing any personal details or putting identification marks on the model/ design/ writeup, will be disqualified.
- On-the-spot evaluation - The jury will evaluate the test on the spot. Also, the model will not be preserved for future reference.
- Missing the Situation Test automatically disqualifies a candidate from the final merit list.

NIFT 2026 Group Discussion - Time duration, parameters, assessment
The GD would be of 15 to 20 minutes and include a discussion on an assigned case study. A panel of experts will then assess the candidates on various parameters, including:

Eligibility criteria for participation in NIFT 2026 Situation Test (B.Des)
The Situation Test is conducted for B.Des candidates who have been shortlisted based on CAT and GAT scores.
- Appearing for both the NIFT CAT and GAT written tests is mandatory to get shortlisted.
- Only shortlisted candidates are eligible for participation in the Situation Test
NIFT 2026 Situation Test Exam Pattern
The Situation Test will be of two hours duration and conducted in offline mode. It is a practical exam, during which candidates will be provided with a set of material, using which they have to make 3D models and answer questions asked in the question paper. In addition to making the model, the candidate will also have to textually explain the model they have created.
Venue - NIFT Campuses
Eligibility criteria for participation in NIFT 2026 GD/PI (M.Des. MFT, and MFM)
Candidates seeking admission to the MFT and MFM have to first appear in a written test (GAT). M.Des candidates need to appear in both CAT and GAT written tests.
These candidates will be next shortlisted for a group discussion / personal interview (GD/PI) based on the results of the written tests.

A. The choice filling process for the SItuation Test (B.Des) is conducted a few days before the exam.
Q. When will the admit card be released for the NIFT 2025 situation test?
A. The admit cards for the Situation Test for B.Des program will be available in April 2025.
Q. When will the group discussion/ personal interview be conducted for the MFT, M.Des, and MFM programs?
A. The personal interview will conducted from March to April 2025 (tentative). The candidate needs to refer to the program-wise shedule for the PI. The document uploading process for shortlisted candidates will also be conducted.
Q. Who is eligible for participation in the NIFT 2025 PI?
A. For the M.Des course, candidates need to get shortlisted based on GAT and CAT scores, while for MFM and MFT courses, candidates need to get shortlisted based on GAT scores for participation in the group discussion/ personal interview.
