The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) Special Rounds are the final opportunity for JEE Main qualified candidates to secure admission to vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs after the completion of JoSAA counselling. Every year, thousands of aspirants wait for the CSAB counselling because closing ranks often move beyond the JoSAA last round cutoffs, allowing candidates with much lower ranks to get admission.
CSAB Cutoff Trends for JoSAA Vacant Seats: One of the biggest questions among candidates is: how much do CSAB cutoffs actually drop compared to JoSAA last round? The answer depends on several factors such as institute, branch, category, home state quota, and the number of vacant seats available after JoSAA. These vacancies arise because candidates withdraw admissions, opt for IITs, private universities, or decide not to report to allotted institutes. As a result, many branches of NITs, IIITs and GFTIs witness a significant increase in closing ranks during the CSAB Special Rounds.

CSAB 2026 Cutoff Trends After JoSAA Round 5 (Last Round)
This year, JoSAA counselling allotment was completed in five rounds. Based on past trends, here is an analysis of how the cutoffs (last rank) usually drop in CSAB as compared to JoSAA counselling last round:
- If your JEE Main 2026 CRL rank is in the 20,000 to 1,50,000 range, CSAB is a golden opportunity for you to get a seat in NIT/IIIT/GFTI now that JoSAA has closed.
- Top NITs such as Trichy, Surathkal, and Warangal generally record less or no changes in CSE and ECE cutoffs because these seats are almost filled during JoSAA.
- Mid-ranked NITs may witness noticeable movement in core engineering branches.
- Several GFTIs and newer IIITs often experience good cutoff drops due to higher seat vacancies.
To give you a clearer picture, we have represented what to expect in CSAB after JoSAA in the table below:
| Type of College/Branch | Expected Change from JoSAA Round 5 |
|---|---|
| Top NITs with CSE and ECE | Little or no rank movement |
| Mid-tier NITs | 500 - 3,000 rank movement |
| Newer IIITs | 2,000 to 8,000+ rank movement |
| GFTIs | Often witness the largest rank movement |

Candidates can check CSAB opening and closing ranks on the official website, csab.nic.in. They have to enter the details asked to check the list of courses and colleges based on the or and CR of each counselling round.
You can verify and analyse the previous year CSAB opening and closing ranks at csab.nic.in.
With rank under 50,000, you can target CSE/ECE in newer IIITs (Kalyani, Dharwad), core branches in top NITs (Jalandhar, Bhopal), and tech branches in GFTIs (JNU, BIT Mesra).
CSAB Cutoff Branch and Institute Trends After JoSAA (based on past year)

| IIIT Kancheepuram | CSE | 65,000 |
| IIEST Shibpur | CSE (HS/OS) | 16,874 (HS) / 21,240 (OS) |
| Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) | CSE | 37,432 |
| Central University of Rajasthan | ECE (OBC-NCL) | 1,65,866 |
| Other GFTIs | Mixed branches | 1,00,000 - 1,38,590+ |
Branches That Witness the Biggest Rank Movement in CSAB After JoSAA Last Round
The extent of cutoff movement largely depends on the popularity of the programme. Branches that usually see larger movements include:
- Civil Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Metallurgical Engineering
- Mining Engineering
- Biotechnology
- Production Engineering
- Chemical Engineering (in some institutes)
Little or no rank change: On the other hand, highly sought-after branches such as Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Artificial Intelligence, Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), and Mathematics & Computing generally witness limited changes, especially in top NITs.
Instead of thinking that every college will have a big cutoff relaxation after JoSAA, candidates should look closely at last year CSAB cutoff trends and compare them with the closing ranks from JoSAA Round 5. They should then create a balanced list of choices for CSAB choice filling. Using this approach can greatly increase the chances of getting admitted to a suitable NIT, IIIT, or GFTI through the CSAB Special Rounds.

Yes. CSAB retains the Home State (50% quota) and Other State (50% quota) categorisations for NITs, just like in JoSAA.

If you are OBC candidate then you can
1) Fill JoSSA — try for NIT Manipur/Nagaland/Mizoram in Civil or Mechanical
2) Participate in CSAB — extra chance
3) Don't skip state counselling — OBC quota there can be very beneficial
4) Apply to NSUT/YMCA — placements rival many NITs
