What challenges I faced in my career: Malla Pavan Kumar

Malla Pavan Kumar, a 4th year Mechanical Engineering student from Lovely Professional University, talks about the challenges he faced in his career.

Lovely Professional University

It was in the time between March and April of 2013 that I completed my 10th board exams. I was in the dilemma of “What next?” I had an idea of building a gaming website but I was afraid of expressing the idea. Some suggested that doing XI-XII would be the best option and some suggested that I opt for the technical field by doing diploma or ITI. Most of my friends chose to do XI-XII, and I chose the other way by selecting diploma. One reason for this might be the fact that somewhere deep down, I always wanted to do something different from others. This is how I chose my career path.

How I cracked college admission

One of my relatives told me that the notification for the entrance test had been released and asked me to fill the application form for it. I filled the form and applied for the entrance test. But when I came to know about the syllabus of the entrance exam, I was shocked and afraid. I felt it was not my cup of tea to clear that entrance test as most of the topics were from the state board curriculum while I had done my matriculation from CBSE board. One of my friends also applied for that entrance exam. We both went in search of coaching institutes which would help us clear that test. We took admission and worked very hard to compete with the students who had studied the state board syllabus. I joined the coaching centre 20 days before the scheduled exam date. I gathered previous years’ material for that exam and put an extra effort into learning the topics for that test, as I felt that was the most productive way to clear any entrance test. I managed to cover all the topics which were in the syllabus by the day of the exam.

After giving the exam in May 2013, I waited for the results. Finally, the results were out and I got a decent rank in the entrance test. I was a kid who didn’t have any idea about the technical streams like mechanical, civil, electrical, etc. So as per the suggestions, I chose mechanical as my stream. Then came the time for selection of a college which would provide me the chance to improve and learn about the importance and working of the mechanical field. At that time, we got to know that a college called Sanketika Polytechnic College stood at the second place next to a government college. I applied for admission in that college during the web counselling. At the time of announcement of colleges, I received a mail from the college that I had got admission.

My college life

I always respected my teachers and fellow students throughout my college life. I always explored the things which were taught in the class. But the most memorable thing in my diploma life is I experienced the life of an engineer. I made some friends who made my college life more beautiful. We explored the world outside the college by planning some trips during the college hours, which helped me grow more mature and understand the importance of social awareness in this generation. In our third year of diploma, I got a chance to do industrial training for six months on behalf of our college. This training period helped me improve my communication skills and adaptability to the industrial atmosphere.

To make the most of the college, one should have both theoretical and practical knowledge. Teachers always teach us from what they have experienced in the past. To make a better use of their experience, ask questions without any hesitation. They will help you grow strong mentally.

I think I chose the wrong stream as I wanted to design a gaming website and make a career in that. Because of lack of knowledge, I went on a different path. But I still planned to work on accomplishing my dream. For this, I chose to move out of my home town and go to a college which was well reputed. I chose to complete my bachelor’s degree from a university which ranked in the top 10 universities of India in terms of infrastructure. I chose Lovely Professional University as a platform to get graduated. I got a chance to select Game Design as my minor elective as a part of the curriculum. I am currently pursuing my bachelors from that university.

Selecting the career is a tough job for every student as some students know what they want to become but don’t know the way to fulfil their dreams, while some have pressure from their family and society. Some can’t explain what they want to become. Some get influenced by the movies.

I suggest parents to spend more time with their kids, share everything with them, and give them freedom of thoughts. Give them the belief that you would always support them in every aspect through whatever it takes for them to accomplish their dream. Comparison with other children lowers their confidence. Instead of comparing, ask them to be how they are. Observing children closely makes career selection simple for both- the parents and the children. This observation is only possible when parents spend time with their children. Don’t think about what the society thinks. At the end of the day, they are your children, not theirs. Think about the society only when it comes to morality and humanity. Ask your children to take personality tests after completing their matriculation (class X).

At Lovely Professional University, you can take admission in BTech CSE through their own test called LPUNEST or based on your 12th marks.

JEE is not compulsory, but if you have a good JEE score, it can help you get admission and scholarship.
