In November 2006, the CSE Department and Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology merged to form a single Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT-B.

This engineering institute offers BTech, BTech Dual Degree, MTech, MTech Dual Degree and PhD programmes in computer science. Sources reveal that around 87 seats are available in the CSE department at this engineering institute.

Regarding the CSE programme, IIT-B informs that, “the curriculum covers the theoretical underpinnings of computer science as well as a range of essential topics in computer systems. It also includes various institute level engineering and science courses, and topics in humanities and social sciences.” IIT-B offers minor programme, honours programme as well as honours and minor programmes to students.

Prof Pushpak Bhattacharyya of IIT-B has recently been elected as the vice president of Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) for the year 2014.

Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D)

IIT- Delhi’s CSE programme “emphasizes the need for independent thinking and encourages students to get involved in interesting and novel projects. Further, a significant increase in the open category credits enables students to have a broad base and pursue interests and develop expertise in other areas like mathematics, communications, signal processing, bio-informatics, robotics, management etc. in addition to core computer science”, informs the institute’s official website.

IIT-D’s professors, Amitabha Bagchi and Maya Ramanath were awarded the - Unrestricted Gift from the Faculty Research and Engagement Program of Yahoo! for their proposal on Trend Detection on Twitter.

The institute has also set up Indo-German Max Planck Center for Computer Science (IMPECS) to provide a platform wherein computer scientists from India and Germany can work and research together and that too in a better way.

As per sources, around 63 students are given admission into the CSE department at IIT-D.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K)

IIT-K official website states that it was the “first Institute in India to start computer science education with the initial "computer-related" courses starting in August 1963 on an IBM 1620 system installed in the nation's first "computer classroom".

The department admits about 30 students every year in the BTech programme and 50 students in the MTech programme. The institute admits another 15 students into its dual-degree programme, wherein students are offered both a BTech and an MTech degree at the end of 5 years. There are about 15 students registered in PhD programme at a time.

The course curriculum of BTech in CSE at IIT-K gives students the flexibility to prepare for advanced specializations. The CSE department aims to offer a set of electives so that students can plan their academic programme in advance.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-KGP)

The CSE department at IIT-KGP was inaugurated in 1980. As per the official website, “The first undergraduate batch rolled out in the year 1982 and the first PhD was awarded in 1986.” Currently the department has nearly 300 undergraduate students (B.Tech and dual degree), nearly 60 postgraduate students (MTech) and around 60 research students (MS and PhD).

As per sources, every year 55 students are given admission into the CSE department at IIT-KGP.
The institute’s areas of research include computer aided design of VLSI chips, computer networking, internet technologies, image processing and computer vision, artificial intelligence, computer aids for the visually handicapped, telemedicine, real-time embedded systems, object oriented data-bases, network security and computational geometry.

IIT-KGP’s CSE department has executed projects for clients such as National Semiconductors, Intel, Motorola, Lucent Technologies, Tata InfoTech, MHRD, Department of Science and Technology, C-DAC etc. It is also engaged in consultancy projects with reputed MNCs like Texas Instruments, Motorola, Cadence, View logic, Delsoft, C-DOT and many more.

Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M)

The foundation stone for the CSE department at IIT-M was laid under the name of “Computer Centre” in 1973 with the acquisition of an IBM 370. The institute launched its BTech programme in 1983 prior to which it only offered MTech, MS and PhD programmes.

Sources reveal that 49 students are admitted into the CSE department at IIT-M each year.

As per the official website, “The department has a vibrant student body numbering about 400. Over 60% are postgraduate, mostly supported by scholarships. The department also offers several attractive industry-sponsored Fellowships for outstanding PhD scholars and liberally supports participation in top-ranking international conferences. Over 50 full-time engineers work on R&D projects enriching the academic environment.”

Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT-R)

Considered to be one of the oldest technical institutes in India, IIT-R saw its birth as the Thomason College of Engineering which was established in 1847. “The institution was awarded the status of the first technical university of free India. In the year 2001, the University was declared an institute of national importance and accorded the status of an Indian Institute of Technology.” Further “In January 2013, the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering was been bifurcated into two separate departments i.e. Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering”, informs the official website.
