Mouli Kaushal Jain from Madhya Pradesh topped the CLAT 2019 exam with AIR 5. Know what preparation strategy and study plan she adopted to crack the law entrance exam.

Belonging to a small town, named Ganj Basoda near Bhopal in MP, Mouli Kaushal Jain became the CLAT 2019 topper with a total score of 173.75. As per Mouli, “I don't have any of my family member in the law field but my family supported me a lot. My parents always showed trust in me and my father always used to tell me to dream big and stay focused.”

Mouli has done her schooling from Bharat Mata Convent Sr Sec School, Ganj Basoda. Her father is a businessman and mother is a homemaker.

Shiksha got talking to Mouli to know what prep strategy she adopted to clear the CLAT 2019 exam. Go through the complete interview with AIR 5, Mouli Kaushal Jain below:

Q. Congratulations! Did you expect to be the topper of CLAT 2019?

A.

Honestly no, l was expecting a rank under 100 but a single digit rank was totally unexpected.

Q. What was the preparation strategy that helped you crack CLAT 2019?

A.

I used the Pomodoro technique for my studies. Basically in this technique a person studies for 30 minutes and take a break of 5 minutes. This process is repeated 4 times and then a long break of 20 minutes is given. It improves productivity and concentration. Also, I made time table every day of the subject and more importantly topics which I planned to study.

Q. How did you manage time between board exams and entrance exam prep?

A.

I took a year off and then prepared for CLAT. So I did not have board exams during my CLAT preparation.

Q. Did you take any coaching for this exam?

A.

Yes, l joined LegalEdge Bhopal for my CLAT exam preparation.

Q. What study plan did you follow for this exam?

A.

I studied three subjects a day. I was weak in English and GK so I studied them daily. Apart from this, I studied Legal Aptitude, Logical Reasoning and Maths alternate days. I focused on accuracy in the first six months and speed in the last four months of preparation. So to achieve accuracy I tried to clear all my concepts and studied theory. In the later four months I started practicing CLAT question papers with timer.

Q. Which books did you read to prepare for the exam?

A.

I referred modules which I got from my coaching centre. Apart from that, I also referred some other books which helped me in brushing up my concepts.

For English I referred Objective General English by SP Bakshi and English is Easy by Chentanandan Singh. For Maths I referred Quantitative Aptitude by RS Aggarwal. For Logical Reasoning I referred A Modern Approach to Verbal Reasoning by RS Aggarwal. For Legal Aptitude I only referred my coaching modules. For GK I followed websites like GKToday and AffairsCloud.

Q. How did you deal with your strengths and weaknesses while preparing for the exam?

A.

I feel a major mistake people usually make is they ignore their strengths because of overconfidence. Due to this their strengths turn into weaknesses after a while. So I tried to practice my weak subjects (English and GK) more but I also provided the required attention to my strengths that were Maths and Logical Reasoning.

Q. What other law entrance exams did you take or are planning to take?

A.

Apart from CLAT I gave AILET, SLAT and MHCET Law.

Q. Was law always your first preference?

A.

Yes, I decided to take law as my career in class 11th and started preparing for the entrance exams on my own soon after.

Q. Any tips for students who are planning to take the exam next year?

A.

Identification of strengths and weaknesses is very important. Also, I would like to advise you to form your own methodology of studying. It is not necessary what worked for one will work for another so develop your own study plan.

Q. What are your future plans?

A.

I have taken admission in NLSIU Bangalore. However, I have not yet decided the field of law in which I want to make my career but here I am to explore more opportunities and to find a career path which suited my skills.
