In a major stride towards gender equity, Delhi University will now reserve one supernumerary seat in each postgraduate course for female candidates who are the sole girl child in their families. This initiative builds on the success of a similar policy launched at the undergraduate level during the 2023–24 academic year
The quota will apply to all 77 PG programmes, with admissions processed via CUET‑PG and seat allocation through DU’s Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS)
As per reports, Delhi University officials have emphasized that the quota is a deliberate effort to support the only-girl‑child families—often single‑parent or small households—offering them enhanced access to advanced education and helping close the gender gap at higher levels.
In the 2024–25 academic cycle, 849 students benefited under the SGC quota at the UG level—a notable rise from 764 in 2023–24
DU PG Admissions Process & Timeline
Entrance Criteria: Aspiring PG candidates must appear for CUET‑PG 2025; seats will be allotted through CSAS.
Registration Window: The process typically opens in May–June, with a pan‑national applicant pool treated across all participating colleges.
A new pathway has opened for families with a single daughter, ensuring she gets an additional opportunity at securing a PG seat.
For families managing one daughter, the policy helps balance educational access—especially where UG seats were already secured, but PG admissions are competitive.
With the 2025–26 session marking the first implementation at the PG level, DU aims to track the uptake and outcomes, potentially influencing other universities to adopt similar policies. Follow-up data after the first PG cycle could impact future quota expansions or adjustments.
