Chitkara University and York University signs MoU for Innovative 2+2 Computer Science Pathway Programme

Chitkara University has started a collaboration with York University in Toronto, Canada. The aim is to offer a two + two lane in Computer Science. Through this, students can start their UG course at Chitakara University for the first two years. The remaining two years are completed at York University’s Lassonde School of Engineering. After completing the programme, students will be given a Bachelor of Science degree in CS by the York University.

This helps in addressing the barriers faced by Indian students looking for international education. By completing the formative years in India, students can cut on their expenses of fees and living costs. All the while, students will gain exposure to Canadian academic practices. The credits are transferable to York University, subject to established academic requirements to main the academic standards.

Senior leaders from both universities, including Dr. Rhonda Lenton, President and Vice Chancellor, York University and Dr. Madhu Chitkara, Pro-Chancellor, Chitkara University were present at the MoU signing ceremony held at Chitkara University.

The partnership brings together Chitkara University’s strength in hands-on learning and York University’s focus on research-driven Engineering, creating a joint academic approach that builds on strengths of each institution.

Framework and a Legacy of Excellence

The 2+2 pathway in CSE is built on a curriculum aligned with international academic standards. During the first two years at Chitkara University, students develop a solid foundation in mathematics, programming, algorithms, data structures, and core computing disciplines. The curriculum is aligned with York University’s requirements to ensure that students are academically prepared for advanced study.

Upon meeting the eligibility, paired with strong skills in Math, Computing, and English (such as an IELTS score), students transfer to York University for the final two years. At York University, students get to explore specialised areas including AI, Software Development, Databases, And Computer Systems.

A key feature offered is the co-op semester, which lets students gain paid internship experience with industry partners while continuing their studies. The first cohort of students is set to join York University in September 2028. They will receive support through scholarships, housing assistance, and guidance with immigration. This makes studying abroad more financially manageable and connects students with Canada’s PG work permit, giving them a strong start in careers such as Software Development, Data Science, AI, and Systems Engineering.

Dr. Madhu Chitkara stated that a Canadian curriculum is followed at the home institution for the first two years to ensure a smooth transition for the students when they join the university in Toronto. It was also noted that the students are assisted through the duration with the help of York University, housing facilities, and certified student immigration specialists.

Dr. Rhonda Lenton emphasised the progressive partnership by saying that York University has always been an advocate of responsible, responsive, and inclusive internationalisation. The partnership between the two institutions reflects these values. She expressed deep pride in establishing a hybrid programme that allows Indian students to develop a strong foundation at Chitkara University, easing their transition to Canada for the completion of their degree from York University with industry experience.

Dr. Jane Goodyer, Dean, Lassonde School of Engineering, York University further stated that the goal is to give students a smooth, connected learning journey helping them earn valid credentials, gain real Canadian work experience, and build the necessary skills required to lead in an AI-focused world. She also noted that with strong co-op support and industry support, students are well prepared to land paid placements.
