SRM Institute of Science and Technology PhD course is offered to three categories of students, namely full-time, part-time and part-time external candidates. While the duration for full-time courses range from three to five years, the duration for part-time courses range from three to six years. SRM University Chennai offers PhD in 60 specialisations. Apart from these, the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics and IT-Phase II initiated by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) of the Government of India allots two full-time PhD seats to the institute.

SRM Institute of Science and Technology Chennai PhD Admission 2024: Eligibility & Selection
PhD is offered in full-time and part-time mode. PhD (part-time) is offered in three to six-year duration divided into six to 12 semesters, respectively. Candidates can gain admission to PhD through the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics and IT-Phase II or the AICTE QIP Scheme.

Full-Time candidates: All candidates who pursue full-time research in SRMIST shall belong to this category.
Part-Time (Internal) candidates: All candidates employed in SRMIST who pursue part-time research in SRMIST shall belong to this category.
Part-Time (External) candidates: All candidates working in industrial units, colleges, government departments, research organisations or other institutions, sponsored for pursuing PhD courses in SRMIST while continuing to serve in their respective institutions/ organisations which are recognized as the Research Centres of SRMIST shall belong to this category. They shall pursue research in their place of employment and/ or in SRMIST.

Yes, all full-time PhD scholars who are shortlisted for provisional registration are paid INR 25,000 per month for a maximum period of three years. Those who have qualified in UGC NET (including JRF)/ CSIR NET (including JRF)/ GATE/ GPAT are paid INR 31,000 per month for a maximum period of three years. The eligibility for availing stipend every year, subsequent to the provisional registration, is based on the progress made in research during the previous year, as part of PhD.
Under the founders scholarship scheme, SRM University encourages toppers in the qualifying examination or JEE exam to seek admission in the first year of BTech. It also encourages outstanding sports personalities to seek admission in Diploma/ UG/ PG programmes offered at SRM IST.
