How to prepare for NIFT without Coaching?

One can also score good marks by preparing for the NIFT exam at home. If you are preparing for the exam at home, or in other words, on your own, focus on these few things.

  • Go through the exam syllabus and pattern: Understand the pattern and syllabus of NIFT exam and prepare accordingly. There are so many websites and YouTube channels that have good study material. NIFT releases the official syllabus and pattern, stick to it.
  • Make a study timetable: Always make a plan. Divide various sections of the exam and give time to all according to your needs. If your General ability is weak, allot more time and if creative ability requires more time, then practice, sketching, doodling, etc., more.
  • Solve sample papers and previous year's question papers: This is one of the greatest strategies to clear the exam. Solve as many question papers as you can. This will help you to know the pattern, type of question, most repeated questions, etc.
  • Work on your drawing and observation skills: Many times, students only focus on NIFT GAT and do not give time to NIFT CAT. Practice Object drawing, human figures, perspective drawing, story illustrations and creative compositions. Give 1 hour daily for this part.
  • Prepare for GAT: Work on topics such as English Comprehension, Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, General Knowledge and Current Affairs for GAT. Solve PYQs and sample paper for this.
  • Read newspapers and design magazines: To prepare for the interview and GAT, reading is important. Read the newspaper daily for new words, synonyms, antonyms, vocabulary, etc. Topics like new designs, fashion designers, fashion weeks, etc., are often asked in the NIFT GAT Stage 1.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Do I need to check previous years NIFT cut-off to prepare for the exam?
A:

Yes, you can check NIFT cutoff of previous year to get an idea of seat allotment and counselling. When checking cutoff table, you should check programme and respective category. After checking cut-off and analyzing trends, you need to prepare accordingly.

Q:   Do we need to join coaching to prepare for NIFT entrance exam?
A:
Joining a coaching for NIFT preparation is not really needed. Coaching is for those who want to learn how to draw things. But, if someone has this talent, which most students passionate about sketching and painting do possess, there is no need for coaching. One can prepare through self-study. For your understanding, I would like to give an example. In coaching, students are made to learn how to draw the 3D image by various techniques using measuring instruments but one who is natural at art can imagine what 3D image would look like if it has to be drawn on a paper and would draw the same. In both cases, the outcome is the same. Regarding theory, that is, GAT, if you are confident to solve Maths, History, Geography, General science up till class 10th level, then there is definitely no need for coaching. Though the level of English is a bit high you can improve it yourself.
Q:   Which is more difficult, NIFT or UCEED?
A:

NIFT and UCEED are equally tough. NIFT has more levels or stage where as UCEED has only one level. UCEED focuses more on Graphic design, Product Design, etc., whereas NIFT focuses on Fashion design, Textile design, etc. The difficulty level of the exam depends on the preparation of the candidates.

Q:   Which is more difficult, NIFT or NID DAT?
A:

NIFT and NID are equally tough. NIFT has two stages: NIFT Written exam and NIFT Situation Test and Personal Interview, whereas NID DAT also has two stages: NID DAT Prelims and NID Mains, which include Studio test and Personal Interview.

Candidate who is preparing for NIFT can give NID DAT entrance exam with the same preparation. Practice and consistency in required for both exams.
