How I made it to Jadavpur University: Tausif Shahenshah

Jadavpur University

I am currently a final-year student in the Department of Civil Engineering (BCE) from Jadavpur University. This university is ranked no. 1 among state universities in India, so getting admission here is tough.

I was an average student with 9.0 CGPA in class 10^th, but I loved solving Math problems, especially Trigonometry, so I opted for Mathematics in my Higher Secondary Education. I joined Narayana Academy, Patna to prepare for IIT-JEE (JEE Advanced). I thought I was working hard for JEE Advanced, but I didn’t know that it was not sufficient. I studied for 1 to 2 hours daily but I was irregular. I attended my coaching classes daily, though. Attending coaching classes helped me a lot in getting 84% in my 12^th standard from the CBSE board but due to irregularity in self-study, I was unable to crack JEE Advanced in my first attempt. However, I qualified JEE Mains in the OBC category with 88 marks (Rank around 211000). I got a rank of around 16000 in WBJEE 2014 and failed in many other competitive examinations. Due to my rank, I couldn’t get admission in any good college, so I chose to drop a year and prepare once again. Then, I joined Vibrant Academy, Kota.

One thing that I knew clearly from my past experience that, self-study was the only way to achieve my goals. I tried to work harder for my ultimate aim of cracking JEE Advanced. I attended my classes daily at Vibrant Academy, and tried to complete all of my homework. I studied for around 7 to 8 hours and overall, it was 12-15 hours of studies daily, including my coaching hours. I slept for only 4-5 hours daily for around 10 months.

I worked hard to crack JEE Advanced and I finally achieved my dream. I got a good rank in JEE Advanced 2015, and I scored 143 in JEE Mains (after normalization, my rank was around 64000, not that good due to lower board percentage). I got a rank of 1307 in WBJEE 2015, a rank of 2000 in CUSAT, 1000 in KIITEE and 4000 in VITEEE.

Then came the time for counselling and I knew that my rank was not good in JEE Mains and JEE Advanced to get into any IIT or any NIT. I made it through the counselling procedure for JEE Mains, JEE Advanced and WBJEE. As I didn’t want to take admission in private colleges, I didn’t go through the counselling procedures for Vellore Institute of Technology, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology and Cochin University. I was sure about my admission in Jadavpur University through WBJEE at the time of counselling and finally, I got into the university through the spot counselling.

I am pursuing Civil Engineering here and enjoying my campus life a lot. Currently, I am preparing for GATE too, to get admission into any good IIT for higher education. I learned a lot here, spent most of my time on the college campus, and experienced a brilliant environment here so far.
