A Commerce stream student from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Livie Jain scored 79/150 in AILET 2018 to secure Rank 11 in what is considered to be the toughest law entrance exam conducted in the country. She was a topper even at school level and secured 94.4% in her CBSE Class 12 result.

When asked how she was feeling, Livie shared that she was not even hopeful about clearing the exam and securing such a good rank was totally not expected. Talking about her law school preference, Livie said that National Law University, Delhi is not her first choice. With respect to her preferences she would rank NLSIU Bangalore above NLU Delhi.

Livie Jain spoke to Shiksha and shared how she prepared for AILET 2018 and offered prep tips to aspirants. Read the detailed interview for more information on how Livie cracked All India Law Entrance Test.

Q. Congratulations! Did you expect to be the topper of AILET 2018?

A.

Thank you! No, I never expected such a good rank. I was not even hopeful of clearing the exam. The exam was difficult, but I guess the choices I made in attempting the questions made all the difference.

Q. Whom do you attribute your success to?

A.

The credit goes to LegalEdge! We were treated as a family and got all the help necessary for the preparation. Harsh Sir and Karan Sir are great mentors. It will not be exaggeration to say that, ‘Yes, LE over delivers!’

Of course, my parents acted as the foundation of my success. They supported me in every phase of the preparation and acted as the energy drink! And my brother who is the joy in my life!

I want to thank my mentor Virendra Sir, a teacher and a guide for life, who helped me during the toughest phases of my life.

Also, I would like to thank my friends who never allowed me to lose hope and encouraged me to give my best.

Q. Could you tell us your preparation strategy that helped you crack AILET exam?

A.

I didn’t have a preparation strategy specific to AILET. But the LegalEdge mock tests helped me to understand the difficulty level and pattern of the exam. I focused on improving the reading speed and vocabulary which, no doubt, helped me score in the exam. I had to work harder with English owing to my background. My weakest section was general knowledge. The best part was, I knew where I needed to put my labour. Maths was never a nightmare, and I had a way with it. I had an acclivity towards logical reasoning but I never left these sections untouched. Polishing is what one needs!

Q. Did you take any coaching for this exam?

A.

Yes. I joined Legal Edge which was indeed one of the best decisions I made.

Q. What study plan did you follow for this exam?

A.

I never planned for long periods. I had a new plan for each day which I was determined to achieve. I studied 3 subjects each day which always included general knowledge. I focused more on solving questions. I always monitored the time taken to solve the questions across all the sections.

Q. How did you deal with your strengths and your weaknesses while preparing for the exam?

A.

I worked harder on the weaknesses and polished the strengths.

Q. Tell us about your family background.

A.

My grandfather, Mr Nirmal Kumar Jain, worked as an employment officer before retirement. My father’s name is Mr Rajesh Kumar Jain. He is a civil engineer by profession. My mother, Mrs Bhawana Jain, is a home-maker. My brother is waiting CBSE Class 10 results and is wishing to pursue IIT JEE.

Q. What are your hobbies?

A.

To name a few; I like sketching and writing poems. I also love reading novels.

Q. What other law entrance exams did you take or are planning to take?

A.

I appeared for CLAT and SLAT, besides AILET. SLAT was the easiest of all and AILET the hardest. The introduction of negative marking made it tougher besides the length of questions.

Q. Was law always your first preference?

A.

Yes. The day I started thinking about my career, I always pictured myself as a judge.

Q. Any tips for students who are planning to take the exam next year?

A.

Stick to revision. Revise as many times as you can. Study using your full potential, from the start. Don’t wait to start studying a month before the D-Day.
