UPSC CSE 2024: Visually Impaired Manu Garg Secures AIR 91, Credits His Mother's Support as His Eyes

UPSC CSE Result 2024: Manu Garg, a visually impaired student, has cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2024, securing an All India Rank of 91. He lost his eyesight in Class 8, a turning point that made everyday life increasingly challenging. Yet, through every obstacle, it was his mother's unwavering support that became his strength. She sat beside him for hours, patiently reading out lessons and helping him grasp each word and concept, becoming both his guide and his eyes.
Excelling Against the Odds: Manu Tops Political Science at Hindu College
After completing his class 12th, Manu began studying independently with the help of audiobooks, screen readers, and TalkBack tools. But he didnβt just adapt he thrived. At Hindu College, Delhi University, he emerged as a top performer in Political Science, securing the second rank in his batch. Beyond academics, Manu also made a mark as a formidable debater, winning over 150 competitions and becoming a standout voice on campus.
Tech, Teamwork, and Determination: Manuβs Study Strategy
It was during the COVID-19 pandemic that Manu set his sights on cracking the UPSC exam. However, limited access to accessible study material posed a major challenge. Undeterred, Manu devised his own system. His friends sent him voice notes via WhatsApp, which they later converted into PDFs to ensure better audio clarity.
Using the TalkBack feature on his phone, Manu would repeatedly listen to the content, reinforcing concepts through audio learning. His mother played a key role too patiently helping him revise audio notes and ensuring nothing slipped through the cracks. With resilience, resourcefulness, and an unyielding will, Manu turned every obstacle into a stepping stone.
