SSC JE paper-I 2020 exam is being conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC) from October 27-30 in two shifts per day – 10:00 AM-12:00 PM and 3:00-5:00 PM. The first shift of SSC JE 2020 exam was conducted successfully from 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon today, October 27.

The exam conducted was an objective paper of 200 marks. Soon after the exam was over, Shiksha reported live from an exam centre in Noida where about 700 students were giving the paper in the first shift. Shiksha reached out to students to know the difficulty level and expected cutoff for paper-I. Majority of the students that Shiksha spoke to shared that the exam was of easy to moderate level.

SSC JE Exam Analysis 2020: Difficulty Level of Paper-I

Ankit, Mechanical Engineering Branch – “Overall, I found this year’s SSC JE paper easier than previous years’ papers. I could complete the paper on time. There were no changes in the exam pattern. I found the technical part of the exam of medium difficulty level. In General Awareness section, questions were asked from History, Polity and Governance. There were about seven to eight Current Affair questions in the exam mainly from 2020. I found the first section of the exam, General Intelligence & Reasoning extremely easy. Questions asked were mainly on Number Systems and Alphabetical Orders.”

Nadeem, Mechanical Engineering Branch – “My SSC JE exam went average as I had studied only the technical part of the exam. In Mechanical Engineering section, mostly questions were asked from Thermo and Boilers. The Reasoning section of the exam was very easy. There were more questions on Number Series from the section. In General Awareness section, there were one or two questions from History and Geography. In this section, a majority of questions were asked from Science, particularly Physics. Current Affair questions asked in the paper were only two to three months old. There were about 10-12 Current Affair questions in the exam. Overall, I found the paper moderate.

As compared to previous years, this year there very few numerical questions and more theoretical questions in the exam. Last year, there were many numerical questions in the exam.”

Sujit, Mechanical Engineering Branch – In the technical part of the exam, there were many practical touch questions, for instance, questions on Boiler Efficiency. In the whole paper, a majority of questions were theoretical. I hardly felt any need to take up the pen for solving a question. Few questions that required calculation on paper were on Boiler Efficiency. There were many questions on Boilers and Thermo Family in the exam. There were also questions on Fluid Mechanics in the exam. Majority of the questions from Boilers were like, ‘If this much is the pressure in the boiler then what will be the efficiency?’. There were also questions on Degree of Freedom. Overall, the technical portion in the exam was extremely easy. If one had studied and practiced the subject well, one could easily solve the questions.

In the Reasoning & Aptitude section, questions were easy but a bit time-taking for me. To attempt questions well, one needs a lot of practice of such questions. There were many Number Series questions in this section. In Current Affairs, questions were mostly on the very latest topics such as ‘Who is the Chief of Defence staff of India?’ The answer options for such questions were a bit confusing. Some of the questions that were asked from General Awareness section were, ‘When was Warren Hastings made the Governor of India?’ and ‘Which material/metal can you easily cut with a knife?’ There were not any question on India-China clash.”

Naveen, Mechanical Engineering Branch – “I found the SSC JE paper-I 2020 very easy. I attempted about 155 questions in the exam. In the Mechanical Engineering part, more number of questions were asked from Boiler and Accessories. There were hardly any numerical questions in the exam. A majority of the questions were theoretical. In General Awareness section, more number of questions were asked from Current Affairs. As compared to previous years, the paper was easy.”

Expected SSC JE Cutoff 2020 for Paper-I

Majority of the SSC JE 2020 aspirants that Shiksha spoke to believe that this year’s cutoff will be high (over 150) as the difficulty level of the paper is low and the number of SSC JE vacancies 2020 is less.

As per Ankit, “The SSC JE cutoff 2020 for Mechanical Engineering should be around 180 marks for General category. On the other hand, according to Sujit, “This year’s SSC JE paper was simple, so the merit will be very high. The cutoff should be around 150.” As per Naveen. “Since the number of SSC JE vacancies is less this year, the cutoff will be high.”
