Research-focused science courses, such as BS and BS-MS degrees, are becoming popular alternatives to traditional engineering and medical paths. Candidates can see why research-focused science courses like BS-MS and BS are getting popular JEE and NEET.
Most Class 12 Science students see JEE and NEET as their next exam after school. Both of these exams lead them to good careers but there is also so much competition. Lakhs of students compete for a limited number of seats in top engineering colleges and medical colleges. But now, many students are thinking other way like apart from engineering and doctor, can they make a career in science itself or not? So for them, research focused courses are the answer.
If you are genuinely interested in science, there are etrance exams like NEST (National Entrance Screening Test) that provide a direct gateway to top tier research institutes like NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai.

What Are Research-Focused Science Courses?
These are undergraduate programmes where traditional learning is combined with real research work. Candidates who wants to pursue this can check options below
- 5 year integrated BS-MS (Dual Degree)
- 4 year BS or BS (Research)
- BS-MS in Computational and Data Sciences at IISER Kolkata
- BS-MS in Geology and Environmental Sciences at IISER Mohali.
These courses include lab projects, summer research and final year thesis.
Commonly asked questions
The examination conducting body, NISER and UM-DAE CEBS, released NEST cutoff marks for the applicants who want to take admission in participating institutes. The cutoff marks for NEST are released along with the declaration of the result. Candidates whose score in NEST exam is equal or above the cutoff marks will be considered for the counselling process.
The MAP is the overall cut off percentile obtained by the candidates in the NEST exam. The highest MAP is 100th percentile. It is different for different categories. As 95 percentile for the General category, 90 percentile for OBC category and 75 percentile for SC/ ST/ Divyangjan category students.
Applicants need to secure the cutoff marks from the category they belong to; otherwise, they won't be able to pass the exam.
A candidate is required to score equal to or above a total Minimum Admissible Percentile (MAP) to get a merit rank. The minimum admissible percentile score varies for different category candidates. For general category applicants need to score 95 percentile marks in NEST exam.
The category wise MAP is mentioned below:
| Category | MAP Marks (in Percentile) |
|---|---|
| General | 95 |
| OBC | 90 |
| SC/ST and Divyangjan | 75 |
Students who score less than the MAP would neither be allotted any merit rank nor be eligible for admission even though he/she secure SMAS in all sections.
Applicants who want to take admission in NISER and are from General category need to secure the passing marks in their category.
Since general category cut off marks are higher than other categories hence applicants who belong to this category need to put more effort to take admission.
This year NEST cut off marks for general category for NISER are in between 80 to 90 marks. Though final marks will be decided after the conlusion of the exam.
Why Are These Courses Getting So Much Attention?
These couses are getting more attention because
1. Awareness
Candidates are getting more aware of IISERs. The 2026 Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research Aptitude Test saw more than 1.86 lakh candidates register for around 2,343 BS-MS seats across seven IISERs.
2. Top institutes Considering
Not only IISERs but IISc Bangalore and IIT Madras also consider IISER Aptitude Test for their BS programmes. So, students are getting more serious about it
3. Less Competition
Every candidate does not have to depend on one exam or fight for one single branch. Research courses give chance to pursue career in many different branches.
4. Option Availability
Fields such as data science, climate science, biotechnology, drug discovery, space technology and AI use strong science and maths skills. A student with research training can move into these areas more easily.
5. Practical Knowledge
Students today want hands on learning. They do not rely on pen-paper learning and exam. So, lab exposure, projects and working under active researchers help them gain more practical experience.
6. National Education Policy (NEP)
NEP 2020 encourages research and multidisciplinary learning at undergraduate level. So, more universities are now offering four-year programmes with research components attracting more students.

100 out of 240 marks is an average score. It can be good depending on your category. However, it is borderline or insufficient mark for the general unreserved category.
