What’s new at CUSAT?

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) offers UG, PG, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF), diplomas, certificates, and short-term programmes in different fields of Science, Technology, Management, Arts, etc. The UGC/AICTE approves all the CUSAT academic courses. Except for PhD and diploma courses, admission to the courses offered by CUSAT is through a Common Admission Test (CAT). CUSAT conducts Department Admission Test (DAT) for PhD, post-doctoral, and PG diploma programme admission. Admission to MBA is based on MTech’s CAT/KMAT/CMAT and GATE scores. 

Further, CUSAT offers a 50% tuition fee waiver as a Scholarship to 10 per cent of the students with higher CAT ranks at CUCEK for the BTech programme.

Q. What is CUSAT CAT?

A. The university conducts CAT (Common Admission Test) for admissions to programmes like Law, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Marine Sciences, Humanities, Science, Medical Sciences & Technology, and Social Sciences and Technology. CUSAT CAT is a computer-based test. The multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are asked in the exam. Candidates can take this test by applying online through the university website (cusat.ac.in).

Q. What is the mode of application for CUSAT admissions 2023?

A. The registration for CUSAT 2023 admission is carried in online mode. Aspirants can apply for the desired course by visiting CUSAT official website (cusat.ac.in). For the PhD/PDF/Diploma/ Certificate programmes, the application process is offline. Aspirants of these courses can collect the admission form from the respective department.

Q. How to apply for CUSAT CAT 2023?

A. Candidates wanting to appear for CUSAT CAT can register online by visiting the admission portal (admission.cusat.ac.in). To submit the form, candidates have to register, fill out the application form, upload the required documents, select a course, and make payment for the application fee. Q. Do I need to send a copy of the confirmation page or application form to Cochin University?

A. No, the candidates need not send a copy of the dully-filled application form to the university. However, candidates shall keep a copy of the confirmation page with themselves until the conclusion of the admission process. This document can be required for verification purposes at the time of admission or seat allotment.

Q. What is the next step after email validation during the CUSAT application process?

A. After the email validation, log in by entering the credentials on the admission portal to start filling out the application form. Moreover, ensure that the email ID provided during the registration is active till the admission process conclusion. The university sends all the updates related to admissions on the registered phone number and email ID.

Q. Does CUSAT offer scholarships?

A. Yes. The University offers a 50% tuition fee waiver as a Scholarship to 10 per cent of the Students with higher CAT rank in each branch of Study at CUCEK for the BTech programme. In addition, the various scholarship schemes available as per multiple sources are Commonwealth Scholarships from the UK, the National Scholarship portal for students, etc. Read more about CUSAT Scholarships here.

Q. What is the minimum marks to qualify CUSAT?

A. Aspirants with at least 50% aggregate (overall) in the last qualifying examination can apply for CUSAT CAT. Only the students up to 25 years of age can take this entrance test. For some of the courses, the required aggregate is 60% and the aspirant shall also have studied Mathematics.

Q. Can I get direct admission in CUSAT?

A. No, admission to all the courses is through entrance exams. For various courses such as MSc, MBA, BSc, BVoc, and Diploma courses, admission is through an in-house entrance exam: CUSAT CAT. In addition, the university also accepts national or state-level exams such as KEAM, CAT, CMAT, GATE, CUSAT DAT, UGC NET, etc. However, aspirants of MA course can seek admission directly only if they have done their bachelor’s from CUSAT.

Q. MBA: What are the accepted exams for MBA admission at CUSAT University?

A. For CUSAT MBA admissions, aspirants can apply through their CUSAT CAT/KMAT/ CMAT/ CAT (IIM) score. The university grants a seat on a entrance exam score basis. Hence, the applicants’ scores in the entrance examinations are considered. There is no other provision for admission. Thus, aspirants shall ensure that they have a valid score of either of the accepted exams.

Q. MBA: How can I get admission in MBA in CUSAT?

A. Admission to MBA at CUSAT is entrance-based (CUSAT CAT/KMAT/CMAT/CAT (IIM)). Aspirants who meet the eligibility requirements can apply by visiting the CUSAT website (cusat.ac.in). Based on applicants' exam scores, a rank list is prepared followed by which selected candidates are called for group discussion and personal interview round.

Q. MBA: How many seats are there in CUSAT for MBA?

A. The total seats available for two-year MBA (full-time) course is 120. In addition, for three-year MBA (part-time), the seat intake is 30. In which, 15 seats are for experienced and 15 for non-experienced category candidates. This seat intake is only for the course offered at CUSAT campus. Q. MBA: Is CUSAT MBA good?

A. Cochin University is ranked 41 among the top universities in the country as per NIRF 2022 rankings. CUSAT MBA 2023 placements statistics are also available. The highest and average package offered to the participants of the placement drive stood at INR 20.14 LPA and INR 9.32 LPA, respectively. In addition, four international offers were made.

Q. MSc: Is there MSc in CUSAT?

A. Yes, the university offers full-time MSc in 19 disciplines along with seven integrated MSc (five-year) courses. Admission to the course is entrance-based. Q. MSc: How to get a seat in MSc at CUSAT?

A. For admission to an MSc course at CUSAT, aspirants shall have a valid score of  CUSAT CAT (Common Admission Test). On the basis of the entrance exam score, the university prepares a merit list and allots seats to eligible candidates. The application process for CUSAT CAT is online and aspirants can apply by visiting the university website (cusat.ac.in).

Q. MSc: What is the CUSAT fee for MSc?

A. The total tuition fee for CUSAT MSc courses ranges between INR 4,950 – INR 2.01 lakh. This given fee is as per unofficial sources and hence may vary. Further, the application fee for the General category candidates is INR 1,100 and the Kerala SC/ST candidates have to pay INR 500. The application fee payment can be done in online mode through credit card/debit card/net banking.

Q. MSc: In which specialisations does CUSAT offer MSc?

A. The university offers full-time MSc courses in 19 specialisations. Some of the popular disciplines offered are Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geophysics, Biotechnology, etc. Moreover, five-year integrated MSc courses are also offered in multiple specialisations such as Biological Science, Financial Technology, etc.

Q. BTech: Will I get admission in CUSAT for BTech?

A. To take admission to BTech at CUSAT, aspirants need to take the CUSAT CAT (Common Admission Test). Based on the aspirant's score in the entrance test, the seat allotment is carried out. Moreover, the first step is the application process. Eligible candidates can fill out the application by visiting the CUSAT admission page (admission.cusat.ac.in).

Q. BTech: What is the minimum eligibility requirement for BTech in CUSAT?

A. Candidates who have passed Class 12 pass with at least 50% aggregate in PCM and 50% in Mathematics are eligible to take admission. In addition, Kerala Scheduled Caste (KSC) and Kerala Scheduled Tribe (KST) communities require only pass marks whereas SEBC candidates of Kerala State (non-creamy layer category) are eligible for 5% relaxation in qualifying exam marks.

Q. BTech: Is BTech from CUSAT expensive?

A. The tuition fee for four-year BTech courses at CUSAT and affiliated colleges ranges from INR 85,800 – INR 8.58 lakh. Total course fee will further be higher including other components such as admission fee, caution deposit, etc. It must be noted that the mentioned tuition fee is as per data collected from unofficial sources and thus can vary.

Q. BTech: Does BTech Marine Engineering aspirants need to apply for CUSAT CAT?

A. Yes, the aspirants for this course are required to take the CUSAT CAT (Common Admission Test). Candidates can apply for this entrance test on CUSAT CAT official website. It is also advised that the aspirant check the eligibility criteria and ensure they meet the criterion.

Q. MTech: How to apply for MTech in CUSAT?

A. For admission to MTech at CUSAT, aspirants need to fill out and submit the admission form online (admission.cusat.ac.in) and submit it. Candidates must check the eligibility criteria before the form filling. Selection for the course is done based on merit in GATE. In addition, candidates without a GATE score can take CUSAT DAT/ Sections A and B exams by the Institution of Engineers (India).

Q. MTech: Can I apply for MTech in CUSAT without GATE?

A. Yes, candidates without a GATE score can also apply for the CUSAT MTech course. The Non-GATE candidates can apply with a valid Department Admission Test ( DAT) score OR ‘A and B’ exams score conducted by the Institution of Engineers (India). Q. MTech: Who can apply for MTech in CUSAT?

A. To take admission in an MTech course of CUSAT, candidates must have BE/BTech/Bachelor’s degree/Master’s degree in the relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% aggregate to be eligible. The candidates are admitted by the university committee as per their scores in the qualifying examinations (GATE/CUSAT DAT).

Q. PhD: What is the CUSAT PhD 2023 admission process?

A. The university conducts Departmental Admission Test (DAT) for Certificate/Diploma/AM Translation/MPhil/PhD/MTech (compulsory for Non-GATE candidates) courses admission. However, UGC NET/CSIR NET/GATE scores are also accepted for admission to PhD courses at CUSAT.

Q. How are the placements at Cochin University, Kochi?

A. CUSAT, Central Placement Office (CPO) works towards providing the best possible career opportunities to students. CPO is responsible for conducting placement drives for engineering, management, and other science departments. Every year, approximately 60-70% of the students get placed at least in one company, and around 30-40% of students got more than one offer. As per the unofficial report, the highest and average package offered during CUSAT 2023 placements stood at INR 25 LPA and INR 4.9 LPA, respectively.

Placements: The placement cell of our college provides placements. The placement cell always manages to bring many top brands. Our college does not support us to get placements. Our college provides very good placements in good companies.

Infrastructure: The infrastructure of our college is good and clean. We have perfect classrooms and facilities. The library is vast with many references and case study materials. The hostel rooms and food are good.

I am very satisfied with teachers, infrastructure, and facilities but placements are not good.

Placements: Around 60% of students got placed in this course. The highest salary package offered was 30 LPA. The average salary package offered was 5 LPA. The lowest salary package offered was 3 LPA. Top recruiting companies are Cisco, Vehant, Big Binary, IBM, etc. Almost 10% of students got internships at Rently, Cisco, and IBM. Top roles offered are SDE, software developer, consultant services, etc.
