It is for Senior Secondary learners. The subject code is 302. The new syllabus applies from the 2026-27 session. It has 27 lessons in total. These include stories, poems, reading passages and writing tasks. Some lessons are new, like "The Crow and the Deer" and "Mary Kom's Interview". Older lessons like "Bholi" and "Of Studies" are also there. NIOS has split the lessons into two parts. One part comes in the public exam. The other part is covered through TMA. NIOS English New Syllabus: Old and Revised Paper Rules

NIOS issued a notification on the revised English syllabus in April 2026. It explains which paper learners can take in each exam. When NIOS revises a syllabus, it sets two question papers for some time. One paper follows the old syllabus. The other follows the new one. This gives old learners time to switch.

In the April 2026 exam, the New Syllabus paper was compulsory for learners admitted in 2025 (Block-I). The Old Syllabus paper was compulsory for those registered before that. A learner can write only one paper. They cannot mix questions from both papers. Learners should check the NIOS 12th Dates page for the exact exam schedule.

NIOS Class 12 English Syllabus for Public Exam (60%)

As per the NIOS English bifurcated syllabus, these 16 lessons make up 60% of the syllabus. Questions in the public exam are set from them.

This list has stories, poems, reading passages and writing skills. Learners should give these lessons the most time.

NIOS English TMA Syllabus (40%)

The other 11 lessons make up 40% of the syllabus. NIOS covers them through the Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA).

• Open the Online Course Material section.

• Choose Senior Secondary Courses.

• Click on English (302)-New. Do not pick the old English (302) link.

NIOS Class 12 English Exam Pattern

The details below are taken from the April 2026 New Syllabus question paper of English (302).

The paper carries 100 marks. Learners get 3 hours to write it. They also get 15 minutes to read the paper first. No answers can be written in these 15 minutes. There are 27 questions in all. All questions must be answered. Some questions have two options. Learners need to answer only one.

The paper also sets word limits for written answers.

• Very short answers: 30 to 40 words

• Passage-based answers in Q21: about 30 words each

• Long answers: 80 to 100 words

• Essay: 150 to 200 words

Preparation Tips for NIOS Class 12 English

A clear plan makes English easier to score. Try these simple tips. You can find more tips on the NIOS 12th Preparation page.

• Start with the 16 public exam lessons. In the April 2026 paper, the literature questions came from these lessons.

• Read each story and poem twice. Note the main idea, the characters and the message.

• Practise unseen passages often. The paper had many reading passages with MCQ and True/False questions.

• Revise grammar daily. Focus on tenses, voice, narration, word forms and phrasal verbs.

• Write one letter, email, report or job application every week. Stay within the word limit.

• Solve old papers in 3 hours. This builds speed and confidence.

• Use the 15-minute reading time well. Plan your answers before you start writing.
