Overall review of IIT ISM, Dhanbad.

Placements: The batch size of MME is 55 students, which is comparatively small. Placements are decent and placement percentage is around 80%. The average salary package offered is 15 LPA. Last year placement was not up to the mark because of recession. Most companies are open for the branch. Top recruiters include Caterpillar, Adani, and other Mining Machinery companies.

Infrastructure: Facilities and buildings that are built after conversion from ISM to IIT are really good. NLHC, NAC, SAC, and central library are important buildings. Amber Hostel is provided to the students in first year. It's the worst hostel in the entire college. Small rooms and hygienic mess are the important characteristics.

Faculty: Teachers are highly qualified and knowledgeable. They work really hard to make students understand the concepts with their relevance to practicality. Semester exams are moderate. One needs to study deeply to score well. About 7-8 GPA is a good score here. Course curriculum gets updated frequently to make it more relevant to industries.

Other: Multiple events are held other than curriculum and courses including fests like Concetto, and Srijan.

IIT-ISM Dhanbad, a center of knowledge in the coal capital of India.

Placements: Overall placements are good. Last year due to recession it was not up to the mark. But before that it was decent. Placements percentage is about 80% in mining machinery, talking about 2023 placement states. The highest salary package offered was 44 LPA and the lowest salary package offered was 9 LPA.

Infrastructure: Buildings, hostels, and other complexes that are built after conversion from ISM to IIT are good with better facilities. First-years get to live in Amber Hostel which lacks a lot of facilities. Mess food of Amber Hostel is really hygienic with less variety.

Faculty: Most teachers are highly qualified and knowledgeable as they all studied at the top institutions of the world. Curriculum is also fine as it gets updated frequently according to relevance and requirements in the respective fields. Semester exams are not tough but one could score over 8 CGPA with minimum effort.

An Insider's Inside Insights.

Placements: Massive placements occur in the tech sector, with around 50-60% of students getting placed in some software or tech company. The top roles offered are: software engineering, petroleum engineering, product manager, digital marketing manager, mining engineering, and chemical engineering.

Infrastructure: The infrastructure, while functional, requires modernization. The hostels are decent but could be updated, and the campus lacks modern amenities. However, with the centenary coming up, I expect a big jump in infrastructure. Air conditioning is something they lack in lecture halls and hostels.

Faculty: IIT ISM faculty are generally qualified and knowledgeable. The teaching quality varies. The curriculum covers core engineering principles, but industry readiness may vary. Exams are moderately difficult, requiring a strong understanding and problem-solving skills.

A better and more comfortable choice.

Placements: I am from the mechanical department pursuing a bachelor of technology in mining machinery engineering. According to 2024, the placement percentage of our branch is 75%. Students must score above 7 CGPA. The placement percentage for the bachelor of technology is 93%.

Infrastructure: It is one of the oldest IITs in our country. It was made in 1926. Initially, it is known as ISM Dhanbad. It is a green campus with a vast diversity of vegetation along with enormous buildings. There is a very big technical library, which is Asia's second-largest technical library.

Faculty: Top-class faculty members are available in this college. They are very supportive and comfortable in helping us in every aspect. They are available at any time. One can choose this college. They treat us as their own child. The knowledge is devastated.

Other: It is the best college for mining and petroleum engineering.

Brief description of IIT ISM Dhanbad.

Placements: In the year 2023, due to the recession, placements were not as good as in previous years, but still, around 70 percent of students were placed. The highest package offered in 2023 was 2.1 crores, but it was off-campus. On-campus, the highest package was 87 LPA, a PPO from Atlassian. Apart from PPOs, the highest package was 56 LPA. Top recruiting companies are Google, Microsoft, Amazon, ONGC, Barclays, Schlumberger, and Gail, etc. Around 300 students out of 1000 got internship offers on campus at companies like Google, Microsoft, Adobe, SLB, Tata Steel, British Petroleum, and Zepto, etc.

Infrastructure: The infrastructure of departments and some hostels is very good, but first-year hostels require a lot of improvement. Rooms are too small to accommodate two students; otherwise, all other hostels are good. The ISM library is one of the best in the country. All hostels and departments have Wi-Fi, and AC is going to be installed in all the classes soon. The biggest drawback is the mess food; you will get fed up eating the same food repeatedly. To compensate, many canteens and eateries are present on campus, and recently Domino's also opened.

Faculty: The curriculum is the same as in other engineering colleges in India. Professors are highly qualified and knowledgeable, but only some can deliver the knowledge properly. Some teachers teach very well, but there are also professors you won’t understand at all. The course curriculum is relevant, as almost all students with average grades get placed irrespective of their department. Semester exams are not so difficult; you can easily get decent grades. Less than 10 percent of students fail, and that's because they don't study at all.

Other: I chose this course during JoSAA counseling because while searching for the various colleges and branches that I was getting, I found it to be the most trustable one. Also, IIT ISM Dhanbad is a very trustable institution with a great alumni network.
