NIRF Engineering Rankings 2026

NIRF Engineering Ranking 2026: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranks higher education institutions across India on parameters including teaching and learning resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. For engineering institutions, the framework uses a specific methodology and weightage for each parameter. The NIRF Engineering Ranking is particularly important for students comparing IITs, NITs, IIITs, government engineering colleges and private engineering institutions before taking admission.

To be announced

How Will NIRF Engineering Ranking 2026 Be Announced?

The ranking is announced annually under the National Institutional Ranking Framework. The participating institutions submit information through the NIRF Data Capturing System. The submitted information covers areas such as faculty, students, financial resources, research publications, patents, projects, placements, higher studies, diversity and perception. After the data submission process, the information is processed and evaluated according to the applicable methodology for each category. The final scores are then used to prepare the category-wise rankings. Once the NIRF 2026 results are released, candidates will be able to access the Engineering ranking list online through the official NIRF website. The ranking page will provide the institute name, location, overall score and rank, along with category-wise performance indicators.

What is NIRF Ranking?

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched by the Government of India in 2015. It provides a common methodology to rank higher education institutions in India. The framework was introduced to assess institutions on several aspects of academic and institutional performance rather than relying on a single factor. It covers teaching, research, student outcomes, diversity and institutional perception. NIRF has separate methodologies for different disciplines because the factors important for an engineering institution may differ from those relevant to a medical, management or law institution. For engineering colleges, the NIRF methodology evaluates five broad areas:

  • Teaching, Learning & Resources

  • Research and Professional Practice

  • Graduation Outcomes

  • Outreach and Inclusivity

  • Perception

NIRF Engineering Ranking 2026 Parameters

The Engineering category uses five major parameters. Together, these parameters account for 100% of the ranking score.

1. Teaching, Learning & Resources (30%)

Teaching, Learning & Resources is one of the two most heavily weighted parameters in the Engineering ranking. It evaluates the institution’s student and faculty resources, faculty qualifications and financial resources. The major components include:

  • Student Strength including Doctoral Students (SS) - 20 marks

  • Faculty-Student Ratio with emphasis on permanent faculty (FSR) - 30 marks

  • Faculty with PhD and Experience (FQE) - 20 marks

  • Financial Resources and their Utilisation (FRU) - 30 marks

2. Research and Professional Practice (30%)

Research is equally weighted with teaching and learning in the Engineering ranking. This parameter considers the institution’s research output, publication quality, patents and professional projects. Its components are:

  • Publications (PU) - 35 marks

  • Quality of Publications (QP) - 40 marks

  • IPR and Patents: Published and Granted (IPR) - 15 marks

  • Footprint of Projects and Professional Practice (FPPP) - 10 marks

3. Graduation Outcomes (20%)

Graduation Outcomes measures what happens to students after and during their graduation. The parameter includes:

  • Placement and Higher Studies (GPH) - 40 marks

  • University Examinations (GUE) - 15 marks

  • Median Salary (GMS) - 25 marks

  • PhD Students Graduated (GPHD) - 20 marks

4. Outreach and Inclusivity (10%)

NIRF also considers how inclusive and diverse an institution is.

The Outreach and Inclusivity parameter includes:

  • Region Diversity (RD) - 30 marks

  • Women Diversity (WD) - 30 marks

  • Economically and Socially Challenged Students (ESCS) - 20 marks

  • Facilities for Physically Challenged Students (PCS) - 20 marks

5. Perception (10%)

Perception measures how an institution is viewed by academic peers and employers. The Engineering methodology assigns the entire 100 marks under this parameter to Peer Perception among employers and academic peers. Perception carries a 10% weightage in the final Engineering ranking.

NIRF Ranking 2026 Categories

NIRF Engineering Ranking 2025 vs 2024: What Changed?

The top of the Engineering ranking remained relatively stable between 2024 and 2025. IIT Madras remained No. 1, while IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay retained their second and third positions. IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur also remained in the top five. There were, however, some notable changes further down the list.

IIT Hyderabad moved from eighth in 2024 to seventh in 2025, while IIT Guwahati moved from seventh to eighth. NIT Tiruchirappalli remained ninth and IIT (BHU) Varanasi remained tenth.

BITS Pilani moved up from 20th in 2024 to 11th in 2025, making it one of the most notable changes among the top 20 engineering institutions. IIT Indore moved from 16th to 12th, while NIT Rourkela moved from 19th to 13th.

How to Check NIRF Engineering Ranking 2026?

Once the NIRF 2026 results are announced, candidates can check the Engineering ranking online by following these steps:

  1. Visit the official NIRF website.

  2. Open the Rankings 2026 section.

  3. Select the Engineering category.

  4. Check the list of ranked engineering institutions.

  5. Search for a particular college using the institute name.

  6. Check the college’s overall score and rank.

  7. Compare its performance with the previous year’s ranking.

The official NIRF portal provides separate ranking pages for the Engineering category and also publishes rank bands beyond the top 100. In the 2025 Engineering ranking, institutions were listed in rank bands of 101-150, 151-200 and 201-300 in addition to the ranked top 100.

What Does NIRF Engineering Ranking Mean for Students?

The NIRF ranking can be used as one of the factors while comparing engineering colleges, but students should not use the ranking as the sole basis for choosing an institute.

Students should also compare:

  • Branch and specialisation offered

  • JEE Main/JEE Advanced or state-level cutoff

  • Placement records

  • Median salary

  • Course fees

  • Campus infrastructure

  • Faculty

  • Research opportunities

  • Location

  • Hostel facilities

  • Alumni network

  • Internship opportunities

The NIRF Engineering ranking provides a broad institutional comparison, while factors such as branch-specific placements and admission cutoffs can be more relevant when choosing between two engineering colleges.

NIRF Engineering Ranking 2026: What to Expect

The NIRF Engineering Ranking 2026 is awaited and the official release date has not been announced by the Ministry of Education as of September 10, 2026. The data submission process, however, has already been completed, with the main 2026 DCS window closing on March 16.

Until the 2026 list is released, IIT Madras remains the latest No. 1 engineering institute in India based on the NIRF 2025 ranking. The 2026 results will show whether IIT Madras retains the top position and whether the ranking positions of IITs, NITs, BITS Pilani, VIT, Jadavpur University and other leading engineering institutions change.
