NIRF Ranking 2026 Release Date
The NIRF Ranking 2026 release date has not been announced. Based on the pattern of the last two year, the NIRF 2026 engineering rankings can be released anytime soon.
- NIRF 2024 was announced in August 12, 2024
- NIRF 2025 was released on September 4, 2025
NIRF 2026 data submission opened in January 2026, with institutions until mid-March 2026 to submit the required information. Following data collection, submissions go through a verification stage where the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) verifies claims against sources like Scopus, Web of Science, and patent databases post which the final ranking is released.
What is NIRF Ranking?
NIRF stands for National Institutional Ranking Framework. It was launched by Ministry of Education on 29th of September, 2015. It is a standard ranking framework using statistical analysis of various data points related to higher education institutes in India. Before NIRF, students were dependent on their personal perception or reputation of colleges and even some unofficial rankings to judge about various colleges. NIRF on the other hand, presents data driven ranking based on research outputs, faculty, placement, infrastructures and a few other parameters.
The first NIRF rankings were released in April 2016 and have continued on yearly basis since then. NIRF ranking is released in several categories which include engineering, management, architecture, law, medicine, agriculture, and skill development. The top IITs in India 2026 list can be checked through NIRF engineering category rank.
NIRF 2026 Engineering Ranking Parameters and Weightage
To list down top IIT in India 2026, every institution is scored out of 100 based on five weighted parameters. Understanding these is key to interpreting why one IITs NIRF ranking is above another, since a small gap in any single parameter can shift the overall order.
Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR) - Weightage is 30%
This is the single largest component and evaluates faculty strength, student-faculty ratio, faculty qualifications and experience, and the financial resources an institution allocates toward its academic infrastructure. IITs generally score well here due to their established faculty base and government-backed funding, though newer or expanding campuses sometimes lag on faculty-student ratios.
Research and Professional Practice (RP) - Weightage 30%
Equally weighted with TLR, this parameter measures publication output, citation quality, patents filed and granted, and the volume of sponsored research and consultancy projects. Institutes like IIT Madras, Delhi, and Bombay in particular pull ahead of the rest in this category due to their larger research ecosystems, industry partnerships, and higher patent filing rates.
Graduation Outcomes (GO) - Weightage 20%
This parameter for IITs NIRF ranking is related directly to student success parameters which include placement rates, median salaries, the proportion of students pursuing higher studies, and performance in relevant competitive examinations. For engineering aspirants, this is often the most practically relevant parameter, since it correlates closely with real-world career outcomes.
Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) - Weightage 10%
This parameter rewards institutions for diversity in education, the proportion of women students and faculty, representation of students from different states and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and facilities for differently-abled students.
Perception (PR) - Weightage 10%
The final component captures the institution's reputation among academic peers, employers, and the public, gathered through structured surveys. While it carries the smallest weight, perception can still meaningfully affect rank in a tightly contested field.
IIT NIRF Ranking 2026 List
The candidates will be provided here the complete list of IITs NIRF ranking and its score out of 100 once NIRF engineering ranking 2026 list is published.
The NIRF engineering category is the most closely watched of all categories as it directly influences how JEE Advanced candidates rank their institute preferences during counseling and marking their preference in top 10 IITs in India. Until the release of current ranking, check previous year NIRF engineering ranking below.
Factors Which Might Influence NIRF IIT Rankings 2026
Every NIRF cycle brings at least a few methodology tweaks or new data points that are worth calling out once the 2026 results are official. Candidates will be provided here the new factors and parametrs, if any that would effect the NIRF 2026 engineering ranking.
Previous Year IIT NIRF Ranking
In NIRF 2025, IIT Madras topped the Engineering category for the tenth consecutive year with a score of 88.72 out of 100, followed by IIT Delhi at 85.74 and IIT Bombay at 83.65. The broader NIRF ranking for engineering top 100 college list includes 23 IITs, 22 NITs, 4 IIITs, and 34 private institutions, reflecting how competitive the space has become beyond just the IIT colleges.
While the top three positions have shown remarkable stability over the past several cycles, mid-table IITs, particularly newer campuses established after 2008 have shown more year-on-year movement as they mature their research output and faculty strength.

IIT NIRF Architecture and Planning Category Ranking
IITs with dedicated architecture and planning departments which include IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur regularly place in the top brackets of this category, competing against dedicated architecture schools like SPA Delhi.
Why IITs Lead in Top Engineering Institutes of India
Institutions that consistently top the NIRF Engineering and Overall categories tend to share a few common traits, and IIT Madras's decade-long streak at the top of the Engineering category offers a useful case study.
Strength in Research Output and Patents: Sustained leadership in NIRF rankings is rarely accidental it typically reflects years of compounding investment in research infrastructure, PhD enrollment, and industry-sponsored projects. Institutions with dedicated research parks and strong industry linkages tend to generate disproportionately higher patent filings and sponsored research revenue, both of which feed directly into the RP parameter that carries 30% weight.
Placement and Graduation Outcomes: A high graduation outcomes score usually reflects not just strong placement percentages but also high median salaries and a meaningful share of students progressing to higher studies at top global universities, all of which reinforce an institute's overall standing.
Faculty Quality and Institutional Resources: Well-funded institutions with a healthy faculty-to-student ratio and strong doctoral output tend to perform consistently well on the TLR parameter, which combined with RP, accounts for 60% of the total score.
IIT NIRF Rank vs Other Ranking Systems
While NIRF is India's official ranking system, many students also weigh global rankings like QS World University Rankings or Times Higher Education when evaluating institutes, particularly for postgraduate study-abroad decisions. It's worth noting a few structural differences:
NIRF is India-specific and government-run, focused heavily on measurable domestic outcomes like graduation results and inclusivity.
QS and THE rankings are global and weight international faculty ratio, international research collaboration, and global employer reputation far more heavily areas where even top IITs sometimes rank lower globally than their NIRF position would suggest.
For undergraduate admissions in India, NIRF remains the more directly relevant benchmark, since it's built specifically around the Indian higher education context and is the reference point used informally during JEE Advanced counselling.
