IIT Bombay grants admission to its programmes based on national-level entrance test ranks followed by centralised counselling or direct departmental evaluations. Candidates must meet the eligibility rules specific to their chosen course.
Selection Criteria
- BTech / BS / Dual Degree: Selection is based on rank in JEE Advanced, followed by JoSAA / CSAB centralised counselling.

Yes, JEE Main is required for admission to IIT Bombay's BTech programmes. It is an eligibility requirement for JEE Advanced. Students cannot get admission to IIT Bombay using only the JEE Main score. Aspirants must appear for JEE Advanced and participate in JoSAA counselling for final seat allotment in BTech course.
IIT Bombay admission to all the courses is entrance-based (Except for EMBA, where admission is merit-based and performance in the interview round). The IIT Bombay admission process includes the application process, selection round, cutoff, merit list or counselling and other steps. For BTech, candidates have to clear JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Further for other courses such as MTech, MBA, MSc, BDes, and MDes, aspirants need to clear GATE, CAT, IITJAM, UCEED, and CEED, respectively to qualify for further admission rounds.
IIT Bombay admission to BDes course includes various steps. Starting with registration to entrance exam, counselling and seat allotment. Before jumping to application, candidates must also check their eligibility. Any candidate who have completed Class 12 can apply for BDes course.
Step 1: Registration
Candidates need to apply online for BDes course with an application fee of INR 3,800 for open and INR 1,900 for reserved category. The common application form will be available through the IIT Bombay Admissions Portal.
Step 2: Selection
The selection to BDes course is based on UCEED rank. A merit list is prepared based on UCEED rank of the candidates.
Step 3: Counselling
Once shortlisted, candidates need to register for counselling. The seat are alloted based on the UCEED rank of the candidates. Aspirants must pay the fee to confirm their seat in the institute.

The institute offers Merit-cum-Means Scholarship to a maximum of 25% of the sanctioned intake of UG and MSc students. IIT Bombay offers merit-based scholarships. The scholarship is offered based on the performance of the students in the semester exam. Approximately 20% of the students are beneficiaries of the various scholarships are from various endowment funds. Additionally, a few other scholarships are available centrally from IIT-B. Besides, SC and ST candidates are exempted from paying the tuition fees.
Yes, IIT Bombay offers Merit-cum-Means Scholarship to UG students. It is awarded to a maximum of 25% of sanctioned intake. For Dual degree, it is available only up to fourth year.
Merit Criterion: For new entrants of BDes their UCEED Rank, will be the criterion. In subsequent years, the criterion will be their academic performance during the preceding academic year.
Means Criterion: The parental income is the basis for the ‘means' criterion of the scholarship. At present, students with parents annual gross income from all sources for the previous Financial year does not exceed INR 5 Lacs are eligible to apply for Merit cum Means Scholarship.

The course outline of mechanical in IIT Delhi or IIT Bombay is similar and is quite well aligned with the course structure of top ranked international universities and the mechanical is one of the most desired and demanded branches in the IITs. The universities stand on similar QS ranking level and the facility and quality of infrastructure on average is almost the same in both the campuses, IITB has a lake, a pretty larger campus than that of IITD whereas IITD stands in a very desired location of Delhi ( in Hauz Khas) which stands very close to the international airport and various railway stations and is comparatively very green and clean than the outer Delhi. Admission in IIT Bombay is considered competitive. To get admission in UG engineering courses, students must first give JEE Main exam. Then if the aspirant passes the cutoff, they can appear for the JEE Advanced Exam. The entry to IITs is decided solely on the basis of JEE Advanced rank. The official website to apply for JEE Main 2026 is jeemain.nta.nic.in. NTA has released the JEE Main application form 2026 session 1. Candidates can fill the form online from the website. JEE Main 2026 Session 2 application form will be available in January last week, 2026.
Opening and Closing rank depends on the category and quota of candidates. For general category under All India, closing rank was 1191 in 2024. Cut off are differant when it comes to other categories or female candidates and even domicile of home state. In All India, opening and closing rank for female candidates was 3895 and 3895. Admission to B.S. in Mathematics in IIT Bombay - Indian Institute of Technology is based on the scores obtained in the entrance exam JEE. Applicants are advised to confirm what category are they applying while checking for cut offs.
The total tuition fee is inlcusive of admssion fee, examination fee, caution deposit, and charges for many other facilities provided by the institute during the programme. The total tuition fee for the PhD programme at SJMSOM is INR 96,000. Note that the mentioned fee is as per unofficial sources, hence, is subject to revision.
The total tuition fee for IIT Bombay MDes is INR 2.7 Lacs as per an unofficial source. Students belonging to SC/ ST/ PwD category or a child of institution staff are exempted from paying the tuition fee. There is a concessional and a non-concessional fee for candidates belonging to General/ EWS/ OBC-NCL category. The concessional is offered on tuition fee. Candidates apart from the tuition fee are required to pay examination fee, medical fee, etc. Students not staying in hostel are exempted from the payment of hostel fee.
Apart from the course fee, candidates also have to pay a registration fee of INR 300 for General/ OBC Male and INR 150 for SC/ ST/ PwD and female candidates.
A minimum of Class 12 is required to apply for BDes course at IIT Bombay. Below is the detailed eligibility:
- Candidates should have been born on or after Oct 1, 1999., if belonging to Open/ EWS/ OBC-NCL Category and on or after October 1, 1994, if belonging to SC, ST or PwD Category.
- Aspirants should have obtained a rank in UCEED. A candidate can attempt UCEED a maximum of two times, and that too in consecutive years. UCEED score is valid for one year and only for admissions in the same corresponding academic year.
- Candidates need to pass all five subjects in Class 12 or equivalent. Those who have appeared for the first time in the qualifying exam in 2022 or earlier are not eligible.
