This was the last major examination for BA LLB aspirants in 2017 for admission into one of the youngest NLUs. For most of the students NLU Himachal Pradesh would be the last choice among the NLUs, but for some students from the states of Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, etc., HP NLU could be the top choice if they do not manage to get into the top 7-8 NLUs.

HP-NLET 2017 had 150 questions to be done in 120 minutes. Each question had 4 options. There was a penalty of 0.25 marks for every incorrect response. The reward for getting the right answer was 1 mark per question. The test had 3 questions on Himachal Pradesh.

Time was not at all a constraint in this examination and all 150 questions could have been attempted in 100-110 minutes.

HP NLU has a total of 45 all India seats and 15 seats for the domiciles of Himachal Pradesh. The university had predicted the examination structure to be like this:

The actual test did not exactly follow this pattern. There, of course, cannot be a very clear boundary between Legal Knowledge and General Knowledge at this level, but other test areas were also not adhered to as per the pre-announced structure. There were no clearly defined sections in the examination and all 150 questions were put without any break in between.

This is how HP-NET 2017 sections were:

1) English Section

The overall difficulty level of this section was from easy to moderate. Some questions had very close options. A couple of idioms were difficult to do.

Ideal Score: A well-prepared student should be able to score above 25 here.

2) Quantitative Aptitude

This section was very easy. One of the questions was erroneous.

Ideal Score: One could have easily scored 20-21 here.

3) Logical Reasoning

There were 9 questions in Logical Reasoning Section.

All these questions were easy to do. The section had 4 questions on “odd one out”. It also had questions on Coding, Directions and Sequences. One of the Coding questions had an error in it.

Ideal Score: One could have easily managed 8 or 9 here.

4) General Awareness

Note: We are NOT counting the questions from Indian Polity here as it appears that HP NLU has considered it as part of Legal Awareness.

Many Current Affairs questions were tricky as in some position based questions (chairman of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, etc.) options of the current as well as one of the former incumbents both existed.

The difficulty level of this section was moderate.

Ideal Score: A score in excess of 40 here can be considered very good.

5) Legal Awareness

Some questions from Indian Polity were difficult to handle. Legal Phrases were also not easy to do, but Legal Reasoning was a cakewalk.

The difficulty level of this section was also moderate.

Ideal Score: A score above 25 would be considered good here.

Overall, a score in the range 115-120 should be a good enough to get into the final list of HP NLU.
