MBA is one of the most popular programmes in India for two reasons: First; it can be pursued by students from all streams irrespective of what they did in their bachelor’s, second, it is a sureshot improvement of employment prospects and earning capacity of all graduating students.

Roughly 4400 colleges in India offer as many MBA programmes of which 82 percent of the colleges offer full-time MBA courses and the remaining 18 percent offer part-time MBA courses. The infographic below captures is a huge skew in the supply of full-time MBA and part-time MBA courses in India.

MBA Colleges in India are mostly privately owned. Only about 14 per cent of the colleges are government or publicly owner institutions although a majority of the ranked MBA colleges feature in this small public-owned colleges list as given in the table below.

Another important thing to bear in mind for MBA aspirants is the fact that 87 percent of all MBA programmes being offered in India are degree courses, the remaining 26 percent are diploma courses and a mere 0.32% are certificate courses.

Top MBA Specialisations
Finance, Sales & Marketing, Human Resources form the top three MBA specialisations followed by IT & Systems, Operations and International Business in terms of supply of courses. One can also conclude from the table below that while the number of MBA specialization options are many, the top six form nearly three-quarters of all MBA courses offered in India.

Most Affordable MBA course fees
That MBA courses are mostly unaffordable, is probably one of the biggest myths in the postgraduate management education sector. Referring to the infographic below: One-third of MBA courses in India can be undertaken for less than Rs 1 lakh fees, another third cost between Rs 2 lakh – Rs 3 lakh per year. An astounding 85 per cent of MBA courses in India will cost you less than Rs 5 lakh fees per year. Only about 16 per cent of MBA courses cost upwards of Rs 5 lakh.

Where are the top cities for doing MBA?
Delhi NCR is the number one destination for students enrolling in MBA courses with 30 percent MBA colleges falling in this city. Another 17 percent of MBA colleges happen to be in Bangalore followed by 14 percent in Hyderabad. Surprisingly, Mumbai, which is the financial capital of the country is home to only 9 percent of all MBA colleges in India.

Which exam should you take to improve your chances of getting through an MBA?
Both CAT and MAT provide equally good chances of making it to a top MBA college with 19 and 18 percent colleges accepting these exams as qualifying criteria for their MBA programme respectively. CMAT is accepted by 15 percent colleges, XAT by 13 percent colleges followed by ATMA that is accepted by 8 percent colleges.
