IIT Madras to Admit Olympiad Achievers Without JEE Advanced, 34 Supernumerary Seats Introduced
IIT Madras Opens Admissions for Olympiad Achievers, to offer 34 Supernumerary Seats Under 'Science Olympiad Excellence' Category from 2025-26
Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has introduced a new admission pathway for undergraduate programs, allowing students with outstanding performance in national and international Olympiads to secure seats without appearing for JEE Advanced.
Under the newly launched ‘Science Olympiad Excellence’ (ScOpE) category, admissions will be available from the academic year 2025-26. A total of 34 supernumerary seats will be created, with two seats per program, including one reserved exclusively for female students.
Similar to IIT Madras' existing Sports Excellence and Fine Arts and Culture Excellence admission modes, ScOpE will provide a dedicated pathway for students excelling in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Informatics, and Biology Olympiads. The eligibility criteria, including age and Class 12 qualification requirements, will remain the same as JEE Advanced. However, applicants must not have been admitted to any IIT in previous years.
IIT Madras Admissions and Selection Process
Applications Open: 3 June 2025
Selection Basis: Performance in recognized Olympiads, with rankings determined through the ScOpE Rank List (SRL)
Application Portal: jeeadv.iitm.ac.in/scope
The admission process for ScOpE will be conducted independently of JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) and will follow a separate procedure on the IITM-ScOpE portal.
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, emphasized the institution’s vision behind ScOpE: "The world's grandest puzzles aren't solved by memorizing textbooks but by those who dare to dismantle them, piece by piece. With this vision, IIT Madras embarks on yet another new journey by offering admission to its coveted undergraduate programs for candidates with demonstrated excellence in science Olympiads."
He urged eligible students to apply, stating: "To those who've proven their brilliance on the international stage of science Olympiads, we don't just offer admission; we offer a sanctuary where their insatiable curiosity will find its most fertile ground amongst the blissful IITM flora and fauna."
Programs and Seat Distribution
The 34 supernumerary seats will be available across 17 undergraduate programs, including Computer Science and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, and Medical Science and Engineering. Each program will have two seats, with one reserved for female candidates.
