Several misconceptions and myths indicate that the organising IIT sets the JEE Advanced question paper and decides the difficulty level. However, it is worth investigating to what extent the toughness of the exam is dependent on the organising institute. In this article, we will bust the myths and check the actual facts regarding JEE Advanced conducting IITs and the exam difficulty level. Read below.
JEE Advanced Organising Institute: JEE Advanced exam is conducted on a rotational pattern by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Out of the 23 IIts of the nation, seven IIts take turn to conduct the exam each year. JEE Advanced 2026 is expected to be organised by IIT Roorkee as per the rotational pattern. The official JEE Advanced website is jeeadv.ac.in. Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, earlier known as IIT JEE, has a historical timeline starting from 1961. Over the years, the JEE Advanced exam has gone through several changes in its name and format. Also, JEE Advanced is considered one of the toughest exams in the world. In 2013, the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) was renamed JEE (Main), and IIT-JEE was renamed JEE (Advanced). This led to the JEE (Main) becoming the screening exam for JEE (Advanced). In 2018, JEE (Advanced) was transitioned from a pen-and-paper-based exam to a computer-based test mode.
In this article, we will try to understand what pattern is followed by the IITs to conduct the JEE Advanced exam annually, the exam difficulty level over the years, and whether or not the conducting IIT impacts the JEE Advanced difficulty level.

It cannot be said which IIT is known to set the toughest question paper for the JEE Advanced exam. However, as per many, IIT Guwahati is known to set the toughest JEE Advanced papers because in 2016, when IIT Guwahati conducted the JEE Advanced exam, the paper was very tough with some controversies. But IIT Guwahati conducted the exam again in 2023, and that year, the paper was pretty normal and usual.

To summarise, candidates must bear in mind the following key points:
- Firstly, it is worth noting that the perceived difficulty level of any exam is subjective and varies from person to person. What may be considered challenging for one individual may be deemed moderate by another, depending on the level of preparation for the exam.
- Secondly, it is important to understand that the level of the JEE Advanced paper difficulty is not influenced by the conducting IIT. This factor is independent of the exam's difficulty level.
- Thirdly, it is important to recognise that the level of the JEE Advanced paper difficulty is not constrained by any particular trend over the years. The perceived difficulty level of the exam is based on the opinions of experts and the perceptions of students. The level of difficulty of the exam will always be determined by the level of preparation of the students taking the exam.
