Top Central Government Engineering Colleges
Apart from IITs and NITs, several other centrally funded institutions feature in the NIRF Engineering ranking. According to the 2025 ranking, the prominent central government institutions included IIT Indore, NIT Rourkela, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, NIT Karnataka, NIT Calicut, Jamia Millia Islamia, IIT Jodhpur, NIT Warangal, Delhi Technological University and IIT Ropar. This is important for students because the term “government engineering college” covers more than just IITs and NITs. Central and state government institutions also appear in the ranking.
Top State Government Engineering Colleges
State government-funded and public universities also feature in the NIRF Engineering list. In NIRF 2025, Jadavpur University was ranked 18th and Anna University was ranked 20th in Engineering. Other notable state-funded institutions included Visvesvaraya Technological University, Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University. This means students should not restrict their college search only to IITs and NITs. Several state-funded universities and engineering institutions also perform strongly in the NIRF rankings.
How Does NIRF Rank Engineering Colleges?
The NIRF Engineering ranking evaluates institutes using five broad parameters:
-
Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR)
-
Research and Professional Practice (RPC)
-
Graduation Outcomes (GO)
-
Outreach and Inclusivity (OI)
-
Perception
These parameters are combined using the NIRF methodology to arrive at the overall score and rank of an institution. The official 2025 ranking shows individual scores for these parameters along with the overall score.
What is the NIRF Ranking?
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a ranking framework of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It evaluates higher education institutions across different categories and publishes annual rankings. For engineering aspirants, the NIRF Engineering ranking provides one way of comparing institutes on factors that go beyond entrance-exam cutoffs. However, students should also consider factors such as course availability, fees, placements, location, infrastructure and admission criteria before choosing a college.
