Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) NET (also known as CSIR UGC NET) is a national-level exam conducted by the National Testing Agency to determine the eligibility of candidates for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for Lectureship (LS)/ Assistant Professor in the universities and colleges of India. Bhanu Pratap Singh, CSIR NET 2022 Topper (AIR 146), shared his success story & preparation strategy. Bhanu has also qualified GATE Physics- 2021 and then again pursued Master of Technology in Applied Optics (2021-23) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He qualified for the CSIR NET Physical Sciences exam in June 2022 with an All India Rank (AIR) 146.

Q: Tell us something about your background?

A: I am Bhanu Pratap Singh, and I come from a diverse academic background. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics (2013-16) from Teerthanker Mahaveer University, Moradabad, where I developed a strong foundation in the basics of science and mathematics with practice. Building upon that, I pursued a Master of Science degree in Applied Physics (2018-20) from Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University, Bareilly, focusing on Advanced Condensed Matter Physics and Nanoscience. After that, I qualified for GATE Physics- 2021 and then again pursued a Master of Technology in Applied Optics (2021-23) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, where I got specialization from basics of Optics to advance Biophotonics and Biomedical Imaging.

During my academic journey, I had the opportunity to work on various research projects and collaborate with esteemed professors, which helped me refine my analytical and problem-solving skills. I also participated in several conferences and workshops, where I presented my research findings and gained exposure to the latest advancements in the field.

During the MTech at IIT Delhi, I qualified for the CSIR NET Physical Sciences in June 2022 with AIR 146, which further strengthened my expertise in fundamental physics. This achievement reflects my commitment to continuous learning and being updated with the latest developments in the field.

In terms of professional experience, I have worked as a Research and Teaching Assistant at IIT Delhi for one year. This role allowed me to apply my theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and develop strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Q: What was your overall and section-wise marks/score in CSIR NET exam? Which year did you qualify for the exam and where you are currently working?

A: Part A: 25.00/30

Part B: 17.50/70

Part C: 36.25/100

Total: 78.75/200

Year of qualification: June 2022. The result was announced in November.

Right now, I am working as a Research Fellow at the Swiss National Science Foundation at the Institute of Applied Physics, University of Bern, Switzerland.

Q: Why you’ve chosen this exam? Which other exams did you appear in and which you have been able to crack?

A: I chose to appear for CSIR NET exam because it is widely recognized as one of the top competitive examinations in the field of science. This exam holds immense value for me as it serves as a benchmark to assess my knowledge, skills, and expertise in the subject matter.

In addition to CSIR NET, I have also appeared in other notable examinations relevant to my field. Some of the exams I have undertaken include CSIR NET Physical Sciences 2020, 2021 and 2022, GATE Physics 2020, 2021, and IIT-JAM Physics 2016 and 2017. While the journey has been challenging, I am proud to share that I have successfully cracked CSIR NET Physical Sciences June 2022, GATE Physics 2021 and IIT- JAM 2016, 2017. These achievements have been significant milestones in my academic and professional journey, developing a sense of accomplishment and reinforcing my determination to excel in my chosen field.

The specific reason to choose CSIR NET is that it aligns perfectly with my career aspirations. This exam provides an opportunity to showcase my in-depth understanding of the subject, critical thinking abilities, and research aptitude. Moreover, qualifying for CSIR NET demonstrates my commitment to staying at the forefront of scientific advancements and contributing to the growth and development of the field.

Q: How much time did you prepare for the CSIR NET exam? Did you crack it in the first attempt?

A: Preparing for the CSIR NET exam required a dedicated and disciplined approach. I invested a significant amount of time and effort to ensure thorough coverage of the syllabus and to develop a strong conceptual understanding of the subject matter. Overall, I dedicated approximately one and a half years along with my Master's degree to my preparation for the CSIR NET exam.

During this time, I followed a structured study plan that included regular study sessions, solving questions, and attempting mock tests to check my progress and identify areas that required further improvement. I also made use of various study resources, for example- textbooks, online courses, and YouTube videos to supplement my learning.

Regarding the outcome of my attempts, I was able to crack the CSIR NET exam on my third attempt. However, it’s important to note that success in any examination is the result of a combination of factors, including hard work, preparation, and a bit of luck. Remember, be truthful about your preparation timeline and the results of your attempts. Even if you did not crack the exam on the first attempt, focus on the lessons learned and your determination to persevere.

Q: Tell us about the challenges you faced while preparing for the exam.

A: Preparing for the CSIR NET exam was a rigorous journey that presented its own set of challenges. Some of the challenges that I faced during my preparation can be summarized as:

• Vast Syllabus: One of the main challenges was the extensive syllabus of the CSIR NET. The vastness of the subject required careful time management and prioritization to ensure comprehensive coverage of all relevant topics. To overcome this challenge, I made a detailed study plan and divided the syllabus into manageable sections.
• Balancing Workload: Balancing my preparation alongside other responsibilities, such as coursework and personal commitments, was another significant challenge. To overcome this challenge, I learned to prioritize and manage my time effectively.

Q: Did you take any coaching for the exam? If yes, from where and for how long? If not, how you managed to do self-study?

A: I opted for a self-study approach during my preparation for the CSIR NET exam. While I did not enrol in any specific coaching program, I relied on various resources and strategies to ensure a comprehensive and effective study routine.

To facilitate self-study, I made use of a wide range of study materials, such as, textbooks, reference books, online resources, NPTEL lecture series and video lectures. These resources allowed me to gain a deep understanding of the subject matter and stay updated with the latest advancements in the field.

I also utilized online platforms and educational websites that offered practice questions, and mock test specifically tailored for the CSIR NET exam. These resources helped me gauge my progress and allowed me to simulate exam-like conditions.

Managing self-study required discipline and effective time management. I created a structured study plan that encompassed all the essential topics. This approach ensured that I covered the entire syllabus in a systematic manner. While self-study allowed me the flexibility to design my learning approach to my personal strengths and weaknesses, I also acknowledged the importance of seeking guidance from experts available online and from friends and seniors who have qualified for the exam.

Q: How to prepare for CSIR NET exam? Tell us the strategy you applied to prepare for the exam.

A: Preparing for the CSIR NET exam requires a well-planned and disciplined approach. Here are some strategies that can be applied for preparation:

1. Understand the Exam Syllabus: The first step in preparation for the CSIR NET exam is to thoroughly understand the exam syllabus. I carefully reviewed the syllabus provided by CSIR/NTA and identified the key topics and subtopics that needed to be This helped me create a roadmap for my study plan
2. Prepare Study Plan: I developed a comprehensive study plan that covered all important topics within the exam I divided the syllabus into manageable sections
3. Study Materials: To gather study materials, I made use of a combination of textbooks, reference books, online resources, and YouTube
4. Practice with Previous Year Papers: Solving past papers and sample papers played a crucial role in my preparation It allowed me to familiarize myself with the exam pattern, understand the questions asked, and manage my time effectively
5. Mock Tests and Self-Assessment: Taking regular mock tests and self-assessments were integral to my preparation strategy. Mock tests helped me simulate the actual exam environment, improve my speed and accuracy, and build
6. Revision: Regular revision is essential to reinforce the learned concepts. I have completed several rounds of revision, revisiting key topics and solving practice

Q: Is coaching important to crack the exam?

A: The importance of coaching in cracking the CSIR NET exam depends on the individual and their specific learning style and needs. While coaching institutes can provide structured guidance, study materials, and expert faculty, it is not the sole determinant of success in the exam.

Cracking the CSIR NET exam is a result of consistent effort, determination, and a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. While coaching can provide valuable support, it is not the only path to success. Many aspirants have cracked the exam through self-study and by utilizing various resources available.

Q: Tell us about your CSIR NET study routine?

A: My CSIR NET study routine revolved around maintaining a structured and disciplined approach to ensure comprehensive coverage of the syllabus. It’s important to note that everyone’s study routine may vary based on personal preferences, commitments, and learning styles. The key is to have a well-structured plan, consistency in study sessions, and a balanced approach that includes both theory and practice.

Q: What is the ideal time for starting the preparation?

A: The ideal time to start the preparation for the CSIR NET exam depends on several factors, including your familiarity with the subject matter, prior knowledge, and the time you can dedicate to studying. While there is no fixed timeframe that applies to everyone, starting your preparation well in advance is generally advantageous.

In general, it is advisable to start preparing for the CSIR NET exam at least six to twelve months in advance. This timeframe provides a reasonable buffer to cover the extensive syllabus, engage in regular practice, revise thoroughly, and build confidence before the exam.

Q: How much time did you spend regularly on preparation?

A: I maintained a regular study schedule during my CSIR NET exam preparation. The amount of time I spent studying varied based on the availability of my schedule and the complexity of the topics I was covering. On average, I dedicated approximately 7 - 8 hours per week to focused study sessions.

I believe in quality over quantity, so I focused on making my study time productive and efficient. Instead of merely counting the number of hours, I prioritized deep comprehension of the subject matter and regular practice. This approach helped me grasp the concepts effectively and develop problem-solving skills.

Q: What should be the section-wise preparation strategy?

A: The CSIR NET exam consists of different sections, and a well-rounded preparation strategy is essential for success.

1. General Aptitude: The General Aptitude section tests your reasoning ability, numerical ability, and verbal aptitude. To prepare for this section, I focused on improving my logical reasoning skills, quantitative aptitude, and English language
2. Core Subject Knowledge: The core subject knowledge section forms the foundation of the CSIR NET I created a study plan to cover each area comprehensively. I referred to standard textbooks, lecture notes, and online resources to gain a thorough understanding of the concepts
3. Previous Years’ Question Papers: Solving previous years’ question papers was an integral part of my preparation strategy. It helped me with the exam pattern, identify important topics, and become familiar with the types of questions
4. Mock Tests: Along with solving previous years’ question papers, I regularly took mock tests and solve quizzes specifically designed for the CSIR NET exam. It helped me manage time effectively, identify weak areas, and work on improving my speed and accuracy

Q: Can you refer to some good books for CSIR NET preparation?
A: Some good books for CSIR NET Preparation are as follows: 

1. “Introduction to Electrodynamics” by David Griffiths
2. “Quantum Mechanics: Concepts and Applications” by Nouredine Zettili
3. “Statistical Mechanics” by K. Pathria
4. “Introduction to Solid State Physics” by Charles Kittle
5. “Atomic and Molecular Physics” by Raj Kumar

These are just a few recommendations, and there are numerous other books available for each subject. There are lots of books and study materials available on online platforms and you can refer to get specific topic-wise notes on each subject.

Q: What according to you were the easiest and toughest sections?

A: The easiest questions for me were from part ’A’ with reasoning questions and direct conceptual physics questions. These questions aligned well with my academic background and were relatively straightforward to grasp.   I had a good understanding of the concepts and felt confident while attempting questions which are based on concepts and visualizations, such as questions on graphs. However, it’s important to note that what I found easy may not be the same for everyone, as it depends on individual strengths and prior knowledge.

The toughest part for me was the long numerical questions with lots of mathematical calculations. These questions required more time and effort with a good level of understanding and involved complex problem-solving. It demanded extensive preparation and a strong grasp of multiple concepts. I invested additional time and effort in this section to overcome the challenges and improved my performance.

Q: How you tackled your strong and weak areas?
A: When it came to addressing my strong and weak areas during CSIR NET exam preparation, I adopted a simple well-known approach to maximize my overall performance.

I initially identified my weak areas by carefully analyzing my performance in mocks, practice quizzes, and self-assessment exercises. I referred to additional study materials, consulted relevant textbooks, and watched educational videos. I dedicated time to practice advanced problems and questions related to my strong areas. I focused on reinforcing my understanding and knowledge in my strong areas. Strengthening my strong areas allowed me to maximize my scores in those sections while improving my weak areas helped me minimize any potential drawbacks and increase my overall performance.

Q: Did you take any mock tests? How do mock tests help to improve your performance in the exam?

A: Yes, I actively took mock tests as part of my CSIR NET exam preparation. Mock tests played a crucial role in improving my performance.

Q: What are your hobbies? Did you attribute it to the preparation?

A: My hobbies include reading books, playing musical instruments, and engaging in outdoor activities like hiking and photography. While these hobbies provided a much-needed break from my CSIR NET exam preparation, some of my hobbies, such as reading and playing musical instruments have cognitive benefits. Engaging in outdoor activities like hiking and photography provided me with an opportunity to immerse myself in the present moment and cultivate mindfulness.

Q: After clearing the CSIR NET exam, how can anyone find a job?
A: Explore fellowship programs and research grants that support early-career researchers. These opportunities provide financial support and valuable research experience. Many organizations and funding agencies offer fellowships to qualified candidates who have cleared the CSIR NET exam. Networking is crucial for finding job opportunities. Connect with professors, researchers, professionals, and alumni in your field. Attend conferences, seminars, and workshops related to your subject area to expand your professional network. Utilize online platforms like LinkedIn to connect with individuals who can provide guidance and insights into job openings.

Q: What factors do you attribute to success?

A: I believe that diligent and consistent preparation was a crucial factor in my success. A strong foundation in the relevant subjects was essential. Regular practice and attempting mock tests were necessary for success. I embraced a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability throughout my preparation. The support and encouragement from my family, friends, mentors and teachers were invaluable.

Q: Any message or advice to the future CSIR NET aspirants?

A: Have confidence in your abilities and believe that you have the potential to succeed in the CSIR NET exam.  Create a well-structured study plan for all the subjects and important topics included in the exam syllabus. know the exam pattern, marking scheme, and time constraints. Focus on understanding the concepts rather than memorizing information. Make use of quality study materials, reference books, online resources and video lectures from various sources. Create a schedule that accommodates your daily routine and commitments. Don’t hesitate to seek guidance from mentors, professors, and seniors who have successfully cleared the exam. Remember to take care of your physical and mental well-being. Be prepared for challenges along the way.
