The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) was formerly known as the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, and it was established in 1929. ICAR is a part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India and it is an autonomous organisation. 

ICAR is the apex body that is trusted with the task of coordinating, directing and performing research as well as education in the field of agriculture (including horticulture, animal sciences and fisheries science) in the entire country.

There are a total 71 agricultural universities and 102 ICAR institutes that are spread all over the country. Out of this number, there are 14 national research centres, 65 institutions, six national bureaus, four deemed universities, and 13 directorates/ project directorates. Therefore, ICAR is known to manage the largest national agricultural system in the world. Here is the list of ICARs in India:

ICAR admission process

Admission in the majority of the ICAR universities and institutes is offered based on an aspirant’s performance in the All India Entrance Examinations for Admission (AIEEA). ICAR AIEEA is conducted by the NTA to shortlist aspirants for admission in UG, PG and PhD courses offered at agricultural universities.
