Both the colleges are equally good, but I will vote for Thapar University, Patiala because of the standard which the University has maintained since its establishment. I will try to distinguish between both colleges with the help of certain parameters:

• ADMISSION PROCESS: Thapar University admits its students on the basis of JEE main marks. Usually cutoff goes higher for Computer engineering (around 180). While SRM University conducts its own examination called SRMJEE.
• CAMPUS: SRM University has a very good and beautiful campus. Student intake is higher at SRM University. 
• Thaper don't have any management quota seat whereas SRM had few seats reserved for the management quota. The fee is almost similar in both colleges. And location-wise Chennai has the upper hand over Patiala.

To begin the Thapar University BTech admission process, candidates need to register for the JEE Main. Based on the scores secured in the national-level entrance test, TIET release the merit list of selected students for the final selection process. Selected candidates must appear for the counselling process. After that, candidates can fill out the application form and pay the BTech admission fee to confirm their seats.

Thapar University admission to most of the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses is based on candidates' performance in several national-level entrance exams. For TIET BTech admission, candidates must have class 12 and a valid JEE Main score. Apart from JEE Main, TIET also accepts CAT/XAT/CMAT/MAT/GMAT/GRE/ Thapar Entrance Test for MBA and GATE for ME/ M.Tech admission. 

Admissions at Thapar University are both merit and entrance based. The selection criteria varies depending on the programme chosen. Certain courses like BTech are entrance based with the university accepting JEE MAIN scores for the same while certain courses like MSc, MCA etc. are merit based. The university accepts Class 12 scores for merit based admissions. Ensure that the minimum eligibility requirement is met and check the selection criteria very carefully before applying for admission to the preferred programme.

After JEE session 2 is completed, only those candidates who are aiming for IITs need to start preparing for JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main. Those who are above the 98th percentile should start preparing for JEE Advanced as soon as possible. Those below this, between the 95th and 98th percentile, should focus on attempting more mock tests and previous year question papers so that they have a better chance of clearing JEE Advanced
