Established in 1857, Mumbai University (MU) is a state-run institution, recognised by the UGC and accredited with an A++ grade by the NAAC. According to the NIRF Ranking 2024, Mumbai University is at 61 position among the top Universities in India. University of Mumbai offers more than 200 Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Diploma, Doctoral, and Certificate programmes in Engineering, Arts, Science, Management, Law, etc. Mumbai University also provides distance learning programmes through its Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL Mumbai University), in addition to its full-time and part-time courses.

The University has not released course-specific placement data. As per the Shiksha students' reviews, the placement rate recorded in recent recruitment processes was 70%. 

The Mumbai University accepts JEE Main exam for the admission to BE and BE Integrated courses. Considering the Mumbai University cutoff 2024, the rank were released till Round 3 seat allotment. The colleges affiliated to Mumbai University allows admission via MHTCET exam. Candidates were allowed to participate in the counselling process based on their scores in the MHTCET exam. To appear in the exam, candidates must have passed Class 12 or the equivalent examination from a recognised board/university with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as the compulsory subjects. Candidates appearing Class 12 board exam in 2024 are also eligible to appear for the exam. But, there is no specific percentage criteria based on which students can be allowed to appear in the exam and get admission into Mumbai University.

The affiliated courses to Mumbai University accepts MHT CET exam. To get into the colleges, the Mumbai University cutoff 2024 for the CSE course stood at 27.66 for the General AI category candidates. Candidates wanting to enroll in the BBA course of Mumbai University should anticipate an expenditure in the range of INR 36,000 to INR 8.1 Lakh. In order to pursue BTech from an MU-affiliated college, the selection is based on merit scores obtained by the students in Class 12 followed by a valid score/ rank in MHT-CET or JEE Main.  In the field of Commerce and Accounting, Mumbai University offers a two-year MCom programme via more than 120 colleges affiliated with it. Admission to MCom is subject to a valid score in the last qualifying exam at the undergraduate level. The University offers MCom of two-year duration via its Faculty of Commerce and other affiliated colleges. Via the Faculty of Commerce, MCom is offered across two specialisations. Candidates are required to have merit in the last qualifying exam for selection and meet the minimum eligibility criteria which is to pass a relevant undergraduate degree with an aggregate ranging between 40% and 60%. To be eligible for the BCom Mumbai University, students must have cleared the Class 12 scores with a min. of 45% aggregate. Hence a students scoring 50% in Class 12 are eligible to apply for BCom. The BCom admissions Mumbai University are cut-off based & depends on the merit in Class 12. Over the past few years, the cut-off BCom has been over 90%.
