Nayak, who managed to get the first rank in both the Engineering and Pharma streams, gives all the credit to his father for not letting him lurk towards smart phones and social networks.
In a candid interview with Shiksha, Prathik shared his prep mantras and a few tips for future aspirants. Read the full interview below.
Q. Q. Congratulations on your achievement. How are you feeling being the KCET 2017 topper? Did you expect it?
I was expecting a rank within the top 10 but bagging rank 1 is really surprising and also a happy moment for me.
Q. Q. What was your rank in JEE Main 2017? Can you share your JEE Main and KCET 2017 score?
JEE Main 2017 rank: 1672
KCET 2017 subject wise scores: Physics - 60, Chemistry - 59, Mathematics - 59
I would also like to share that I scored rank 1 in both the engineering and pharma streams in KCET 2017
Q. Q. How long have you been preparing for?
My preparation for JEE and KCET began from December end of my first PUC. It took me 2 years to say that I am now thoroughly prepared to appear for the exams and expect a rank within the top 10 scorers.
Q. Q. What was your preparation strategy for the exam? What is the minimum time frame needed to prepare for both the exams?
I always focused on clearing the concepts and all the doubts that were built up while preparing for the exams.
As I told earlier, it requires not less than 1 and a half or 2 years to prepare for JEE exams. Once you are thoroughly prepared, KCET can be cracked easily with a preparation of 2-3 months.
Q. Q. Did you also appear for JEE Advanced? What was your strategy for JEE Advanced?
Yes, I did appear for JEE Advanced and I feel there is no different strategy for JEE Advanced. Both of the exams can be easily cracked with a single plan of action.
The only thing different is that in JEE Advanced, one needs to prepare for particular topics whereas in JEE Main, it is an altogether preparation for all the subjects.
Q. Q. What did you do to improve your weak areas?
I faced difficulties while preparing for Organic Chemistry. I could not remember the concepts of Biomolecules. So in order to improve, I started revising the chapter again and again.
Q. Q. Which institute are you vying for and which is the course you aim to pursue?
I would like to pursue with BTech in Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science from any of the IITs. Maybe IIT Madras, to be specific but any of the IITs will benefit me for further job aspects.
Q. Q. What are your expectations from your dream institute?
After graduating of an IIT, I am looking forward to grab a good job with a handsome salary. Other than this, it is a once in a lifetime learning experience to be able to get into an IIT.
Q. Q. Have you taken any other exam/s besides JEE Main, JEE Advanced and KCET?
Yes, I also appeared for COMEDK 2017 apart from JEE and KCET. The preparation strategy for all the exams was somewhat the same.
Q. Q. Do you think coaching is required to crack JEE & KCET?
Yes, coaching is required to some extent. A few concepts in Physics and Chemistry cannot be just read from the course books. It requires a skilled teacher to clear those concepts and all the doubts that can act as an obstacle while preparations, if ignored.
Q. Q. Any tips for aspirants taking the KCET next year?
I would advise them to study more, and keep your concepts clear. Keep away from smart phones. Trust me it will benefit you in future.
Q. Q. So, tell us something about your family?
Well, we are two sibling to our parents. My mom is a homemaker and my father runs a business of logistics and courier services. My elder sister is pursuing her 3rd year MBBS degree.
Q. Q. What plans for the future? What do you want to become?
Inspired by my uncle, I also dreamt of becoming a Software engineering until PUCs. But now, I am not very sure about with the answer. Just wish to pursue with Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science.
Q. Q. Tell us about yourself and your hobbies?
I have always performed excellent in academics. Until PUCs, it was just for the sake of studying. In my 10th class, I scored a 10 point Grade and in 12th class it managed to bag 96% marks in the Karnataka Board. My hobbies include playing basketball, painting and stamp collection. In my free time, I prefer watching movies.

If you belong to the General AI category, the highest (most competitive) last round cutoff was 155 for admission to the M.Sc. in Physics course. The lower the cutoff rank, the more competitive the course is for admission, and vice versa.
