Hostels at IISER Kolkata
Institute has following three hostels in the permanent campus:
* The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Hall
* The Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Hall. * The Nivedita Hall
IISER Kolkata has three hostels. The hostel accommodations are quite good.
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Hall (ICVS): It is an all-boys hostel for BS-MS students. This hostel is the closest to the lecture halls and research labs. You can get to the lecture halls within 2 minutes from this hostel.
ICVS has great facilities including high-speed internet, wash-rooms with geysers, washing machines on each floor. The hostel is under CCTV surveillance. However, there are no strict entering and exiting times specified.
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose (NSCB): NSCB has the same facilities as ICVS. It was also built at the same time. There are 2 wings for girls and 1 wing for boys. The boy’s and girl’s wings are separated by doors.

Firstly, IISER Kolkata has a rigorous selection process, and the institute offers admission based on merit. The selection criteria include a candidate's performance in the entrance exam (JEE Advanced/KVPY/SCB) and their academic record.
However, the cutoff ranks for admission to IISER Kolkata vary each year, and it's not possible to predict the exact cutoff ranks without the latest information. It's best to check the official website of IISER Kolkata or consult with the admission authorities to get the most up-to-date information.
If a candidate have a low rank and are interested in pursuing a course at IISER Kolkata, it is better to apply for other programmes or institutes that have a less competitive admission process. Additionally, you can consider preparing for other entrance exams that may offer more opportunities for admission.
In summary, while a low rank may not guarantee admission to IISER Kolkata, there are other options available. It's essential to research and explore your options carefully before making any decisions.
IISER Kolkata is ranked among the top Science institutes in India. It is ranked 7th in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023 ranking of universities in India. It is also ranked 1001-1200 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 and 351-400 in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2023.
IISER Kolkata is a premier institute for Science education and research in India. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in basic sciences, such as biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. The institute also has a strong research focus, with faculty members involved in cutting-edge research in a variety of scientific fields.
IISER Kolkata is known for its excellent academic reputation, experienced faculty, and state-of-the-art facilities. The institute also has a strong culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.
Here are some of the reasons why IISER Kolkata is so highly ranked:
- Academic excellence: IISER Kolkata has a strong academic reputation and is known for its high standards of teaching and research.

If you are interested in studying Science at a top-ranked institute, then IISER Kolkata is a great option.
I do not have much data on this, But a few (4) of my seniors were placed in Dr. Reddy's lab with salaries around 9lpa.It being a Science institute, they have. A newly made placement cell. (because most of the students opt for higher education after the completion of their studies )Some students also go for government jobs. But as the institute has signed some MoU s with well established foreign institutes (with jku Austria, UDE in Germany, university of Pennsylvania in USA, RWTH Aachen in Germany to name a few)and the high standings in global rankings (placed 48th in young institutes contributing to quality research world-wide by nature, 2019)These factors contribute to a good enough background for a future PhD or MS in other countries. B.Sc in biological sciences is atop course in IISER Kolkata and has a better placement, having average package 7 LPA and higher package is approximately 14 to 15 LPA.
In terms of academics, IISER Kolkata is good but not good as IISER Pune. First of all, major-minor thing is not that good, most of the people opt out of minor and only take major.
And this is really not true that IISERK is good in physics. There are few profs who are very reputed in thier field but most of the physics profs are on a similar level as other IISERs. Overall all the IISER have good research facilities. Also, most of the physics profs have huge ego. Don't know why. They mentally harass students on a regular basis.
* Coming to student life, IISERK campus is very far from the main kolkata city (almost 60 kms). And the transportation from campus to city is terrible. 1.5 hr journey in the local train is very difficult, you will not get any seat and you will be pushed from all sides. That is why, people go to kolkata rarely. As far as I know, pune is almost in the city. Rest things are fine.
Also I would like to mention about doing MS-Thesis project from outside of IISER Kolkata. Only two departments allow that here — Department of Earth Sciences and Biological Sciences. But a huge problem is convincing some profs from here to become Co-supervisor without whom one cannot do from outside. Profs don't want students to do thesis from outside, so they don't agree to become supervisor and knowingly destroy students career and laugh about it. I know people who got Project opportunity from institutes abroad but didn't got Co-supervisor from the IISER Kolkata. Many profs here enjoy mentally harassing students here. It's really tough to survive in labs here because they force students to work for more than 12 hours. it's exhausting and tiresome. even after that profs say things like you are * and don't know anything. they are extremely toxic. some profs use this situation to sexually exploit students. because their friends are the administrators so they get away doing all this bullshit. one would think that how can something like this can happen in premier institutes like IISER Kolkata but it happens a lot.
Students can eat breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner at the IISER Kolkata mess. Breakfast selections will include boiled egg, bread-butter, cornflakes, idli, omelet, sambar, vada, and so on, with tea or coffee. Lunch options include rice, roti, daal, paneer, fish, chicken, dahi, papad, salad, and so on. Evening snacks include samosas, chowmin, bread-butter, omelets, and other items. Students can choose from rice, roti, daal, veg fry, chili chicken, mutton, dahi, and other dishes for dinner.
There is no specific dress code at IISER, Kolkata. However, It is advisable to follow a decent and appropriate dress code while attending classes and other academic activities. Students shall follow the Guidelines for Student Conduct in IISER Kolkata as approved by the Institute governing bodies from time to time and as updated on the website of the Institute.
If a student fails internal exams at IISER Kolkata, the following procedures may be taken:
Academic Probation: The student's academic progress may be rigorously watched if they are placed on academic probation. They may be expected to satisfy specified academic performance targets during this time in order to continue their education.
Remedial Classes: The student may be asked to attend additional classes or workshops aimed to assist them improve in areas where they are having difficulty.
Exam Retakes: In some situations, the student may be given the opportunity to retake failed exams. This may provide them with an opportunity to demonstrate progress and pass the course.
Counseling and Support: To assist the student, academic counseling or support services may be provided.
Keep Things Organized: Your first year of college might be challenging. To remember deadlines for assignments, tests, and other significant events, use planners, calendars, or digital tools.
Time management: Start off by learning effective time management techniques. Set out time in your study calendar for classes, homework, downtime, and extracurricular activities.
Attend Classes: Attending classes on a regular basis is essential for grasping the course material. It also aids in the development of positive relationships with academics, which can be advantageous in the long run.
Participate Actively in Class Discussions: Actively participate in class discussions. Asking questions and sharing your ideas can help you gain a better comprehension of the subject while also demonstrating your interest to your teachers.
Join Clubs and organizations: IISER Kolkata has a number of clubs and organizations for students of various interests. Joining one of these groups is an excellent way to meet like-minded people, learn new skills, and enrich your college experience.
Make Friends: Make friends with your classmates. They can be a great source of information, notes, and study groups. Networking can also help you in your academic and professional endeavors.
During the first year, a student can only fail one course. A student is required to clear the backlog in the extra test, which will be held one year after the regular end-of-semester exam.
In the second year, a student can fail no more than one course and must pass the others.
Backlogs at the end of the Spring semester (within 10 days of the completion of the semester).
The median package offered was INR 6 LPA during placements 2021. However, the median package of INR 7 LPA was offered in 2021. The stats we got from this year's campus placements at IISER-B are highly varied. For instance, the highest package offered was around 10.5 - 11 LPA, whereas the lowest was around 5.5 - 6 LPA.
On the other hand Presidency University is a good college for physics Hons with great faculty members and good infrastructure. Placements: Physics is not a technical course, so there is no such placement in this course. However, it is the best course to go for higher studies. Students can get a chance to do their PhD from abroad. So placements in Presidency University is good as IISER on their equal terms.
Government jobs remain in high demand due to various benefits, including job security, competitive pay, tax benefits, and more.
