IIT Kanpur offers a two-year MTech programme across 15 specialisations. Admission to this course is based on GATE score followed by counselling. IIT Kanpur MTech Admission 2024: Eligibility, Fee and Selection
Offered across 15 specialisations, admission to IIT Kanpur is subject to a valid score obtained by the students in the GATE exam. Check out the eligibility and selection criteria for this below:
- Total tuition fee: INR 20,000 - INR 77,000
- Seat intake: 736*
- Eligibility: A bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science (4-year course) or a master's degree in Science with marks not below the specified minimum. A relaxation of 5% aggregate or 0.5 CPI is offered to SC/ST/PwD category candidates on the minimum eligibility score.
- Selection: A valid GATE score is required for admission to the MTech programme in the case of regular (non-sponsored) candidates. The requirement of GATE score is waived off for the candidates with a BTech/BS (4-year) degree from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two years in BTech/BS (4-year).
- Admission Process: Admission offers for GATE-qualified candidates are displayed on the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP). Students must register at the COAP portal to view and accept their offers. Registration on the COAP portal is free.

The institute has not released the placement report incorporating the overall data for the 2026 drive. However, the institute have disclosed the 2026 placement statistics till Phase I. - Additionally, admission to PhD and MS by Research is based on UGC NET/ CSIR NET and other national-level exam scores.
- After the exams, JoSAA, COAP and CCMN Counselling are conducted for seat allotment to BTech, M.Tech and MSc courses. However, a merit list is released by the institute for announcing the names of the candidates shortlisted for certificate, PhD and MS by Research courses followed by a counselling round. No, there is no interview round for M.Tech admission at IIT Kanpur. Admission offers for GATE-qualified candidates are displayed on the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP). Students must register at the COAP portal to view and accept their offers. Registration on COAP portal is free. Additionally, candidates are advised to download COAP 2022 information brochure. COAP Registration number is mandatory to apply for M.Tech at IIT Kanpur admission portal. Candidates who have not qualified GATE are communicated directly by the department via e-mail.
The final IIT Kanpur CAT cutoff 2023 will be released after the CAT exam results are announced. IIT Kanpur only offers merit-based admission for all the courses. The institute accepts JEE Advanced scores for admission to BTech. Candidates need to pass JEE Main exam prior to appearing for JEE Advanced. Apart from its flagship programme, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kanpur) offers BSc, BS, MTech, MSc, MDes, MBA, along with a few Dual Degree programmes. Admission to all courses is based on scores obtained in the entrance examinations such as GATE, IIT JAM, CEED and CAT. Along with UG and PG courses, IIT Kanpur also offers PhD in various specialisations, admisison to which again is entrance-based.

Docs required:
The list of docs to be submitted at the time of GATE application for MTech is given below:
- Image of student's signature
- Passport-size photo with white background
- Scanned copy of Category certificate (for SC/ST) in pdf format
- Scanned copy of PwD Certificate (if applicable) in pdf format
- Scanned copy of Certificate of Dyslexia (if applicable) in pdf format
- Scanned copy of a valid photo Identity proof such as Aadhaar-UID (preferable)/ Passport/ PAN Card/ Voter's ID/ Driving License (students must carry the same ID (in original) to the examination hall)
Followed by the GATE test, students are required to register on the COAP portal, on which the list of GATE-qualified students is released. Once the GATE process is complete, students are also required to register on IIT Kanpur website.
On the official website of IIT Kanpur, MTech application fee is 500 for General, EWS, OBC & OBC-NCL students & 250 for SC/ST & all DAP students. The application fee is waived for students in the 'Foreign National' category.
