With Rank 15 in CEED exam, Srinag KA secured admission in MDes in Vehicle and Mobility Design programme. He shared that he took a drop year after completing Mechanical Engineering from RNS Institute of Technology, Bengaluru and thereafter gave Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) that is conducted by IIT Bombay. He gave CEED because Design was always his stream of choice as he developed an interest in vehicle aesthetics at a very young age.
Srinag revealed that a total of 4,727 student took CEED 2017. He further shared that he scored 35.2 in Part A and 64 in Part B of CEED exam.
Earlier, he spoke of his experience of giving CEED exam and in this article aspirants can find out his journey after he got shortlisted in CEED 2017.
Q. How did you prepare for the Interview round?
I had worked on a few design related projects during the one year break. I compiled few sketches and a few digital renders in InDesign and got the portfolio printed and spiral bounded in A3 size. It's always wise to be who you are instead of being someone else especially in an interview. So, I tried to be natural in the interview.
Q. Could you explain the entire process that you went through after clearing the written exam?
After the score cards are out, one must register on the net (official website) and upload the relevant documents on the site.
A few tasks which were mentioned on the admission site were completed by me and mailed toIndustrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay (IDC, IITB).
Based on various factors such as CEED rank, quality of the tasks etc, candidates are shortlisted. I had worked on my portfolio and started compiling it in a folder and also added more sketches. Then, I had to appear for a studio test for the branch opted by me and after the studio test I was interviewed by the panel.
Q. Any tips on how aspirants should prepare for these admission rounds?
Prepare to be a designer rather than preparing just to join an IIT. Skills matter but skills aren't everything. Focus more on problem solving/design thinking. It helps in not only solving the questions easily in CEED but also in being a better designer. Don't constrain yourself to just one or two disciplines like Industrial, Animation etc. Try exploring other disciplines and try to learn something. Again, always be curious about your surroundings. You must break, dismantle the objects around you and figure out how it works. Reading newspaper every day and being updated helps a lot.
Q. What all happened in your interview round?
In the interview round, they asked me a few questions related to my sketches. They were curious to know if I've got any projects in my mind to work at IDC. My portfolio was looked closely by the interview panel.
Q. Any advice for CEED aspirants?
Stay Curious and observe your surroundings instead of just seeing it

The qualifying cut-off is the minimum marks a candidate needs to score in the paper to get shortlisted. Part B answer booklets will only be evaluated if the candidate gets shortlisted.
So, if you don't meet Part A cut-off marks, you will not get shortlisted and you Part B answer booklets will not be
