In the WBJEE JECA, marking is done based on the question category. In Category I, 1 mark will be given for each correct answer and for every incorrect answer, a 1/4th mark will be deducted. In Category II, 2 marks will be given for each correct answer. No negative marking in Category II.
Yes. As per the official WBJEE JECA exam pattern, there is a negative marking for wrong answers. For Category I questions, 1/4th of the mark will be deducted for wrong answers. There is no negative marking for Category II questions. Because in Category I there is negative marking, the candidates should be cautious while giving answers.
WBJEE JECA exam pattern is available in the information bulletin released online at wbjeeb.nic.in/jeca.
Pattern of Question Papers is as follows -
Category-I Each Q carries 1 mark (-ve marks = -1/4) | Category-II Each Q carries 2 marks (No -ve marks) | Total Number of Questions | Total Marks |
No. of Q | No. of Q |
|
|
80 | 20 | 100 | 120 |
All questions will be of Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) type, with four answer options and should be completed within 2 hours. The questions will be in English.
As per the official marking scheme of WBJEE JECA, the candidates will be marked according to the category in which the question lies.
Category I: One mark will be awarded for the correct answer. For each wrong answer in Category I, 1/4th mark will be deducted.
Category II: Two marks will be awarded for each correct answer. There is no negative marking for Category II.
WBJEE JECA 2025 Marking Rules Explained
Here we have simplified the WBJEE JECA 2025 scoring rule for you to understand it better:
Category-I (Single Correct Answer)
- Only ONE correct option.
- Correct answer = +1 mark
- Wrong answer = -0.25 mark (negative marking)
- Multiple answers selected: -0.25 mark (negative marking)
- No attempt = 0 mark
Critical Note: Category-I is the risky section because negative marking applies. If you are a first-time candidate then we recommend you to avoid guesswork here in Category-I. Attempt the question only if you confident of the answer.
Category-II (Multiple Correct Answers)
- One or more options can be correct.
- Full marks (2): Only if you select all the correct options without marking any wrong ones.
- Zero marks: If you select even one wrong option.
- Partial marking: If you select some correct options and no incorrect ones. Formula: 2 × (No. of correct options marked ÷ Total correct options)
- No attempt = 0 mark.
Critical Note: This section is rewarding and less risky. Even if you are unsure of all the correct options, you can still earn partial marks by marking only the ones you are confident about. For example, if a question has 3 correct options and you correctly mark 2 without marking the wrong one, you will still get 1.33 marks.
How to Answer WBJEE JECA 2025 Question Paper
Listed below are the instructions for answering the WBJEE JECA 2025 Question Paper:
- Candidates must mark their answers on a special OMR sheet (will be provided at the centre) by ONLY using a blue/black ballpoint pen.
- The bubble should be completely darkened. Incomplete or incorrectly darkened bubbles may lead to the rejection of the answer.
- Bubbles once darkened (marked answers) cannot be changed or erased.
- Avoid putting any extra marks such as ticks, crosses, dots, or overwriting on your answer sheet, or else your answer sheet can be cancelled.
Critical Analysis: OMR marking is strict and unforgiving. You are advised to follow the instructions on how to fill in the OMR sheets very carefully. A single mistake, such as the use of a pencil or a half-filled bubble, can lead to the rejection of your answer, no matter how well you knew it!
Commonly asked questions
No. Category II has no negative marking. If you mark an incorrect option or a combination that includes an incorrect option, you simply receive 0 marks for that question.

Key Takeaways for First-Time Applicants
- Time Management: You would need to attempt 100 questions in 120 minutes. Technically, you only have just over 1 minute for every question. We strongly recommend practising mock tests to improve your speed.
- Be Cautious in Category-I because negative marking can reduce your score quickly.
- Be strategic in Category-II because there is no negative marking.
- OMR Sensitivity: Most of the candidates lose marks because of bad bubbling techniques. Handle the OMR sheet as seriously as the question paper.
- Accuracy First: Random guessing can cost you your marks in Category-I. In Category-II, you can still fetch marks by going for smart, selective answering.
- Practice in English: Since the paper is only in English, brush up on subject-related English terms if you think you are not very comfortable in English.
- Focus Areas: Give extra attention to understanding the difference in marking between Category-I and Category-II, as this is the area where many candidates lose marks.
Our Analysis
The WBJEE JECA exam pattern is not so complex; however, the pattern does require proper planning. The negative marking in Category-I and partial marking in Category-II make it essential for the candidates to strategise even more with knowledge. Therefore, first-timers must give ample time to practising papers, learning from mistakes, and picking out when to make an attempt or when to skip a question.
With the right preparation and exam approach, any first-time aspirant can confidently take the test and succeed in it.
All the best!
