ISRO Chairman Encourages IIT Students to Join India's Space Programme

IIT Bombay Techfest: The chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), S Somanath, addressed students, emphasizing the significance of their involvement in India's space initiatives. He encouraged them to actively participate and contribute to the country's space programs and invited them to contemplate the possibility of joining ISRO to play a role in its endeavours. He addressed the students during the annual science and technology festival, Techfest, organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Bombay.
As per TOI report, in his address, he delved into ISRO's forthcoming initiatives. These encompassed the Gaganyaan human space flight program, missions earmarked for lunar exploration involving human presence, and the aspiration to establish a lunar-based economy, all slated for realization by 2047. Additionally, he highlighted the ambitious launch plan for the 'Bharat Antriksh Station' (Indian Space Station) anticipated by 2035, with the inaugural phase scheduled for 2028.
During his interaction with the students, the chairman highlighted ISRO's intent to explore collaborative research prospects with diverse institutions across India. He emphasized a keen interest in fields like material science and robotics, urging institutions, notably IIT Bombay, to lend their expertise in advancing robotic activities tailored for in-orbit services.
After his address, he engaged in a Q&A session responding to inquiries from the students. He tackled concerns regarding the prevalent trend of students favouring high-paying international employment opportunities. Reports indicate an instance where his team visited an IIT for engineer recruitment. However, upon showcasing the salary details during the presentation, reportedly, 60% of the candidates chose to leave.
