Show patriotism through character, deeds, Infosys Founder tells students

Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy delivered the convocation address virtually. In his message to the students, Murthy said, “You will have to raise the confidence of every Indian by passionately working towards freedom of faith, freedom of expression and freedom from fear. You will have to put in tremendous efforts and make short-term sacrifices for long-term glory. You will not drape yourself in our national flag and shout Mera Bharat Maahaan. These are empty worlds. You will show your patriotism by becoming maahaan in your character and your deeds.”

He said, “Remember that the man who wants to move a mountain begins by carrying small stones. I have immense faith in optimism in everyone of you that you will indeed achieve. A happy mind will achieve great things, therefore have lots of fun.” He signed off by playing a song, aey mere mann, from a Hindi movie, Ferarri ki Sawari.

Dr Rajiv I Modi, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Guwahati, and Prof TG Sitharam, Director of the institute, also spoke on the occasion.

Many universities and educational institutes have switched to virtual mode of convocation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, IIT Guwahati created history by opting for a virtual medal distribution ceremony instead of a physical one because of the raging pandemic. IIT Guwahati secured 41st rank globally (56th in 2021) in the ‘Research Citations per Faculty’ category, of the QS World University rankings 2022.

During the reporting year, IIT Guwahati created four new schools: Mehta Family Foundation School of Data Sciences and Artificial Intelligence; School of Health Sciences and Technology; School of Agro and Rural Technologies and School of Energy Sciences and Engineering with new plans to offer Bachelors, Masters and PhD programmes with an interdisciplinary focus.

IIT Guwahati is also planning to start a interdisciplinary masters programme on 'mission water' jointly between Australian university and IIT Guwahati.
