MPhil Admission 2025: FAQs

Q. What are the eligibility criteria for admission to an MPhil course at DU?

A. The eligibility requirements for admission to MPhil programmes vary throughout colleges. Those who have finished their MPhil programme could be thinking about enrolling in a PhD programme. The eligibility prerequisites must be satisfied before a candidate can pursue an MPhil. For most universities, the fundamental requirements don't change. Interested students can review the points below to obtain knowledge:

  • If a candidate has finished their master's degree in a field similar to the MPhil course they wish to take, they are eligible to do so.
  • In addition, some universities stipulate that applicants must have earned at least 55% of their postgraduate credits in the academic area in which they wish to pursue an MPhil.

Q. Is it worth doing an MPhil. nowadays?

A. For many years, the MPhil programme served as a bridge between master's and doctoral studies. The course helps applicants build a thorough strategy for educating students about the intricacies of research as well as research knowledge and abilities that are useful while pursuing a full-fledged PhD study. Graduates of the MPhil programme can expect excellent compensation and career security, with starting salaries ranging from INR 5 to 10 lakh.

Q. Can one do MPhil from IGNOU?

A. No, IGNOU has discontinued the MPhil course. The MPhil programme was discontinued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as it does not adhere to the norms of the National Educational Policy (NEP).

Q. What is the duration of MPhil course?

A. The M.Phil course duration used to be 2 years. Since the MPhil course has been discontinued, students can now directly pursue a PhD degree after they have completed a 4-year UG degree (3+1 year of research) if they graduate with at least 75% marks and are able to clear the UGC NET exam.

Q. Do I need any documents for admission to MPhil courses?

A. Students who wish to take up an MPhil course can still pursue it through private institutes where it is still available. For admission to any university for an advanced postgraduate degree like an M.Phil, students are generally asked to submit documents like:

  • Class X, XII Mark Sheet
  • Graduation, Post-Graduation Degree
  • Photo ID Proof (like: Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Passport, etc.)

Candidates, who are female and have a disability of at least 40%, are also given a one-year grace period to finish their degrees.
