JEE Advanced 2016

JEE Advanced 2016 commenced today, on May 22 for admissions to the premier IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) across the country. The exam is being held in two parts – Paper 1 and Paper 2. While Paper 1 will be held from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, Paper 2 will be conducted from 2 pm to 5 pm. Aspirants are required to appear for both the papers for B.Tech admissions.

This year, around 2 lakh students were eligible for JEE Advanced 2016. However, around 1.98 lakh candidates cleared the exam. Out of these, only 1.56 lakh registered for the exam.

Like previous years, this year too, Shiksha.com went on field to cover the exam. The reporting time for the exam was 7:30 am and the entry for the same began soon after. Looking pretty tensed, the kids till the last moment were busy in the entry process at the exam center. Unlike last year, this year, the security measures at the JEE Advanced 2016 exam center were pretty high. From police vans to announcements being made on loud speakers, the test center made sure that they leave no stone unturned in arranging the best. Moreover this year, the frisking process was quite strict too.

Most of the students were not in a position to speak as they were pretty tensed. However, the parents of many JEE aspirants spoke to Shiksha and shared their grievances.

Once such parent, Rakesh Negi whose son was taking JEE Advanced 2016 said, “The responsibility of parents’ lies in determining whether or not their kids are made for engineering. Only students who have the apt for it and are good at it should go for this stream. I think, to reduce a little pressure from students’, the IITs should increase their seat intake. Also, I think, Class 12th board marks should not be included in determining the ranks of students. My role in guiding my child was teaching him how to manage time while preparing for the exam”.

Another parent, Agam Singh, whose daughter Aishanya Singh is the CBSE Class 12th topper of her school in Greater Noida said, “There should be some kind of control on coaching centers. They should have some guidelines too. It has now become a business which was not the case in our times. The syllabus that coaching institutes impart to students is very different and of higher level from the CBSE syllabus. The children get confused. My child did and got demotivated. Also, like medical exams, there should be just one exam. Why are so man exams being conducted? “

He further added, “I am not happy with the CBSE Class 12th Board results being declared just a day before JEE Advanced. Can you imagine the mental level of a Class 12th student? Be it good or bad, it affects both. My daughter who topper her school couldn’t concentrate on her studies because of so much media attention. I know some students who couldn’t score well and thus were demotivated a day before the exam. Why didn’t the CBSE stick to the earlier scheduled date of result declaration? Was this intentional? I also believe that Class 12th marks should not be included in JEE rank declaration. It’s not fair to students. What if someone who scored really well in JEE Main and Advanced but not so well in his/her boards? The overall rank is affected. The government needs to do something”.

JEE Advanced 2016 Student Reactions for Paper 1:

Most of the students who Shiksha.com spoke to shared that though the exam pattern for JEE Advanced 2016 has changed, the paper was not tough. They also shared that like always, Mathematics was the toughest, Physics was moderate and Chemistry was the easiest. Take a look at what students had to say about the exam:

Pratyush, DPS, Greater Noida: The paper pattern has changed this year as compared to last year. I am a dropout student. However, the exam was easy this year despite Physics being really tough. Chemistry was easy while Physics was Mathematics was moderate for me.

Vishal, MVM: Chemistry was really easy but Mathematics and Physics was very tough. I could solve around 30 out of 56 students. I feel that in Chemistry, there were more questions from Optics and Modern Physics. And in Chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry were given more weightage. This was not the case in Mathematics. The trick was to not attempt questions you were not sure of. Because there was negative marking of -2.

Yashoda, Ryan International, Greater Noida: The paper was okay but Maths was really tough. I could not really attempt most of the questions. On the other hand, Chemistry was really easy. The paper pattern has also changed this year. This year we had 'One correct answer'questions which is in a way really good for me. I found 'Match the following' type of questions, which was a part of last year's exam, very difficult. Out of all the questions, I could solve 50% of the questions".

Speaking about CBSE declaring the Class 12th board results a day before JEE Advanced 2016, she said, " I think, its really not fair for students. Releasing the results just a day before the exam puts a lot of pressure on students. Any student who has not secured good marks in the exam gets demotivated just before JEE Advanced 2016. If affects their overall performance. It might boost someone's morale, but it also works negatively for a lot of students".

We got a mixed bag of reactions from JEE Advanced 2016 aspirants for Paper 2 who took the exam from 2 pm to 5 pm. Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 this year was for 372 as compared to 504 in 2015.

Here is what the students have to say about the second part of the exam:

Sattwik Gupta, BPS Pilani: I think Paper 1 was tougher than Paper 2. Mathematics was tough in Paper 1, while Physics was tough in Paper 2. JEE Advanced is not an easy task. It's a known fact that the cut off of the exam is pretty high every year. So, I just hope it proves to be good for me and I get the benefit out it.

Arun Kumar, Ramesh International: Paper 2 was tougher than Paper 1 and for me, Physics was the toughest in both the papers. Chemistry and Mathematics was almost of the same level. In the first paper, there were integer type questions, however, in the second paper the questions were more description and paragraph type. In both type of questions, there was no negative marking. Moreover, three marks were awarded for every correct answer.

But, in all kind of questions like Single Option Correct, there was negative marking. There was one relief that in 'One or more correct option' questions, partial marking was awarded. Students got +1 for every correct answer.

Pranshu Garg, Ramesh International: The exam was fine. Actually, the second paper was more difficult with Physics being the toughest as compared to the first paper. Maths was easier in the second paper. The level of difficulty in Chemistry was same in both the papers. As compared to last year, this year, the paper was easier. There was partial marking in the 'Multi Choice Correct Answer'.

Physics is the most difficult of all three subjects asked in the JEE Advanced exam. Many students also finds Maths as the toughest. It largely depends upon the understanding of candidates and how well the students are equipped with basic knowledge of any subject.

It is mandatory to appear in both papers of JEE Advanced exam. The total marks are calculated by adding the sum of scores in both papers.

Candidates should ideally try to solve at least 3 previous year JEE question papers per week. However, candidates can also increase the frequency of this to 5 to 6 papers per week, one month before the exam.
