As per JEE Advanced eligibility criteria 2026, only the top 2.5 lakh rank holders in JEE Main 2026 can appear in IIT JEE Advanced 2026. JEE Advanced Regitration 2026 will start in April.

The JEE Advanced exam will have two papers- Paper 1 and 2. Both paper will be held on May 17 in two slots. The questions in both paper will be from Physcis, Chemistry and Mathematics. To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026, candidates must qualify JEE Main 2026. JEE Main 2026 exam will be held in two sessions, session 1 from January 21 to 30, 2026 and session 2 from April 2 to 9, 2026.   • What is the JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility Criteria?
    JEE Advanced eligibility criteria stay the same year after year. To attempt JEE Advanced 2026, candidates must:
    • Candidates should be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in the BE/BTech paper (Paper I) of JEE (Main) 2026.
    • Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 2001. A five-year age relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates, i.e. these candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1996.
    • A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.
    • A candidate should have appeared for the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
    • A candidate should NOT have been admitted to an IIT under any academic program.
  • JEE Advanced 2026 Exam Pattern and Syllabus
    On one hand, the syllabus of JEE Advanced remains the same over the year, but the exam pattern is quite dynamic. Each year, there are some slight changes made to the exam pattern, and the catch is that the marking scheme, marks distribution, and number of questions are all informed to the candidates on the exam day and not beforehand.   • JEE Advanced syllabus includes 10+2 level topics from Maths, Physics and Chemistry. The detailed syllabus has been published on the official website of the exam with all details.

What is JEE Advanced?

JEE Advanced is a national-level engineering entrance exam for admission to the IITs. It is the second level of the IIT admission screening process, the first being JEE Mains. Top 2.5 lakh candidates of JEE Mains are allowed to register for JEE Advanced. Only those candidates who pass the Advanced level become eligible to apply for IIT admission via the JoSAA counselling process.

IITs offer the following courses to the JEE Advanced rank holders:

  • BSc programs in Science.

Understanding the JEE Advanced Exam Pattern

The JEE Advanced exam pattern is dynamic and changes every year. The only information about the exam pattern that is permanent is:

  • Mode of exam: The exam is held in a computer-based test mode
  • Papers: JEE Advanced 2026 will have two papers - paper 1 and paper 2.
  • Subjects: Each paper of JEE Advanced 2026 will have questions from these subjects - Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
  • Language: Questions in the JEE Advanced 2026 exam will be available in Hindi and English.

Types of questions in JEE Advanced exam: The marking scheme, number of questions and the question distributions change every year. Usually, there are the following types of questions asked in the exam:

  1.  Single Correct MCQs
  2.  Multiple Correct MCQs
  3.  Numerical Answer Type
  4. Match the Following / Paragraph type with numerical answers

Marking scheme: In JEE Advanced, there are usually the following types of marking schemes applied:

  • +3 If all four options are correct but ONLY three options are chosen

  • 0 If none of the options is chosen (i.e. the question is unanswered)
  • -2 In all other cases

MCQ with one or more correct options

  • -1 in all other cases

Integer type

  • +4 for the correct answer
  • 0 for no attempts
  • no negative marks

Match the following followed by MCQs

  • +3 If ONLY the correct option is chosen
  • 0 If none of the options is chosen (i.e. the question is unanswered)

The exact marking scheme and the total number of questions are made available to the candidates on the exam day itself, with the “instructions to candidates” section on the JEE Advanced question paper. Candidates must read all the instructions before starting the exam to understand the marking scheme.

How to Apply for JEE Advanced 2026?

The JEE Advanced 2026 application form will be released on the official website - jeeadv.ac.in after the JEE Main 2026 session 2 results are out. The candidates who will be declared qualified for JEE Advanced 2026 have to fill up the JEE Advanced application form on the official website.

  • Since the JEE Advanced form can be filled by candidates who qualify the JEE Main 2026 cutoff, only such candidates can register for JEE Advanced. Candidates have to authenticate themselves using their JEE Main 2026 application number, their name and date of birth.
  • Next, Candidates have to furnish some details in the registration form, and some of the details will be pre-filled from the JEE Main 2026 database.
  • Thereafter, candidates have to upload the required documents and pay the application fee online.

IIT Admission Process via JEE Advanced 2026

All candidates who will be declared qualified in the JEE Advanced 2026 result will have to register for a national-level centralised counselling called JoSAA. The Ministry of Education has established the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). The JoSAA counselling process facilitates the allocation of seats for undergraduate engineering programs at the IITs. Admission to IITs is based on JEE Advanced ranks. Candidates have to register for the online JoSAA counselling and fill in their choices of IITs and ranches. The seat across all the IITs will be allotted considering the JEE Advanced 2026 ranks of the candidates and the choices they fill in the JoSAA counselling process.

Overall, 50-55% seats are reserved in IITs. The break-up of reservation is - 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 10% for Gen-EWS and 5% horizontal reservation for PwD candidates.

Physics is the most difficult of all three subjects asked in the JEE Advanced exam. Many students also finds Maths as the toughest. It largely depends upon the understanding of candidates and how well the students are equipped with basic knowledge of any subject.
