UGC NET exam pattern 2023 is prescribed by the National Testing Agency (NTA). As per the latest exam pattern, the UGC NET December 2022 and June 2023 Cycle exam comprises two papers- Paper 1 and Paper 2. The time duration of the UGC NET exam is 3 hours. Both papers contain objective-type multiple-choice questions (MCQs). A total of 150 questions are given to the candidates combining paper 1 and paper 2. UGC NET exam does not have a negative marking scheme. The candidates are awarded for correct answers but no mark deductions are made for incorrect answers. The exam is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. The medium of the UGC NET question paper is in English and Hindi languages only. Till December 2018, the UGC NET exam pattern was such that the test consisted of two papers (Paper 1 and 2) that were conducted in two different sessions. Candidates had to complete both papers (Paper 1 and 2) in a duration of one and two hours, respectively. However, in June 2019, NTA changed the exam pattern as per which candidates now have to give both papers in a single three-hour duration.

The UGC NET 2023 exam contains two papers that candidates need to complete in a duration of three hours. Both Papers 1 and 2 contain objective-type questions and it is mandatory for candidates to attempt questions from both papers.

In UGC NET Paper 1, the official website of NTA informs, "The questions will be generic in nature, intending to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate."

UGC NET Exam Pattern for Paper 2

Regarding UGC NET Paper 2 exam, the website informs, "This will be based on the subject selected by the candidate. All the questions of Paper 2 will be compulsory."

Candidates need to choose the subject of the UGC NET Paper 2 from the given options of 82 subjects while filling out the application form. Candidates need to appear in the subject of their Post-Graduation only. Candidates, whose Post Graduation subject is not covered in the list of NET subjects, can appear in a related subject.

UGC NET Exam Pattern 2023 FAQs

Q: How many papers does the UGC NET exam contain?

A: The UGC NET exam consists of two papers. The first paper is common for all candidates and the second paper contains subject-specific questions. The paper 1, common paper comprises questions from teaching aptitude, maths, logical reasoning, research aptitude etc. The candidates have to solve 50 questions based on different topics. Candidates are advised to study the paper 1 thoroughly as the UGC NET paper 1 is a scoring paper that ensures higher marks.

Q: Is it mandatory to appear for both papers?

A: Yes, it is mandatory to give both the UGC NET papers. According to the guidelines of the UGC, the candidates have to qualify for both the papers. The candidates need to secure the cut off marks in their categories to qualify for the UGC NET exam. The aspirants have to take the 3 hours UGC NET exam to appear for both the papers. There is no relaxation given to any candidates in any circumstance.

Q: How many questions does the UGC NET exam contain?

A: The UGC NET exam consists of total 150 questions. 50 questions are from UGC NET Paper 1 exam. The 100 questions are from the UGC NET paper 2 exam. The UGC NET exam is taken for 3 hours. The candidates can attempt all the question as there is negative marking scheme in the exam. But the candidates are advised to practice for accuracy as the cut off for the UGC NET exam is always high.

A: No, there is no negative marking in the UGC NET exam. The candidates are advised to solve all 150 questions to score maximum marks. The candidates who are preparing for the exam must prepare for the accuracy and speed as the exam has no negative marks. 

Q: Does the UGC NET exam contain subjective questions?

A: No, the UGC NET exam does not contain any subjective questions. Both the papers consist of objective Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) only. The candidates have take both the papers as both the papers are compulsary. 

Q: Is the UGC NET exam conducted in offline mode?

A: No, the UGC NET exam is conducted in online mode as a computer-based test. Before 2019 the UGC used to take the exam in offline mode but After the formation of NTA (National Testing Agency) the exam is taken in online mode. In the offline mode one hour is alloted for Paper 1 and two hours is alloted for Paper 2. 

Q: What is the duration of the UGC NET exam?

A:The UGC NET exam is taken for three hours. In these three hours, the candidates have to take both papers- Paper 1 and Paper 2. However, there is no specific time barrier for completing Paper 1 and Paper 2. The candidates can solve the question from both the papers by switching questions from the Paper 1 and Paper 2 in these three hours.

Q: From which subjects are questions asked in UGC NET Paper 1?

A: The UGC NET Paper 1 contains questions from subjects such as Teaching Aptitude, Research Aptitude, Reading Comprehension, Reasoning, Data Interpretation, Higher Education System: Governance, Polity & Administration, Information & Communication Technology (ICT), etc.

Q: For how many subjects is UGC NET conducted?

A: The UGC NET exam is conducted for total of 83 subjects. Earlier, NTA used to take exams for 82 subjects but after the addition of Hindu Studies in the list of the subjects, the subject list was increased to 83. The UGC NET exam will be taken for 83 subject for the December cycle exam that will be taken between February 21 to March 10, 2023.

A: Candidates are allotted two marks for every correct answer in the exam. Exam pattern of the UGC NET exam has been given below for the candidates:

No, candidates are advised to appear in the same or related subject of their post-graduation only. The exam is conducted for 81 subjects or specializations. Candidates can check the list of the subjects and can apply according to that.
