Piyush Goyal attended the 10th BRICS virtual meeting
Union Commerce and Industry minister Piyush Goyal attended the 10th Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa(BRISC) trade ministers virtual meeting today. In the meeting, he stressed that the BRICS all nations need to enhance transparency in their trade and build trust to prevent losing their role as a pre-eminent trade partner.
Mr Goyal stressed on removing multiple hurdles in access to medicines at affordable prices created by the WTO rules for protecting intellectual property. He said that intellectual property rights should not block access to critical medicines and other devices required to treat the disease.
The term “BRIC” is believed to be coined in 2001 by Jim O’Neill, chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management. The first formal BRIC meeting was held on June 16, 2009. South Africa officially became a member nation on 24 December 2010 and the group became ‘BRICS’.
Indian Premier League 2020 schedule released by BCCI
Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 schedule was released by BCCI on July 24, 2020. The IPL 2020 will be organised in the United Arab Emirates from September 19 to November 8. The UAE has no quarantine policy for the person carrying the Corona negative test report while entering the country.
The ICC World Cup was scheduled in October-November 2020 is postponed because of COVID-19 pandemic and paved the way for the IPL 2020.
Indian Railways wagons to get RFID Tag by December 2022
Indian Railway has planned to fit the radio frequency identification (RFID) tag on all its wagons by December 2022. Currently, Indian Railway is maintaining and tracking the physical location of wagons manually.
Along with the RFID tag, trackside readers will be installed at stations and key points along the tracks to read the tag from a distance of about two meters and transmit the wagon identity over a network to a central computer.
Digantar developed India’s first space debris monitoring system
Indian tech start-up Digantar Research and Technology developed India’s first in-orbit space debris monitoring and tracking system based on Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology. The startup was founded by the Lovely Professional University alumni Anirudh Sharma & Rahul Rawat in 2018.
It has planned to send the nanosatellites in the low earth orbit to collect the real-time data to monitor the space debris. The start-up has been selected for the SID (Society for Innovation and Development) incubation programme at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore.
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan addressed the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan addressed the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) virtually on July 24, 2020. The minister highlighted India’s efforts and strategy in handling the COVID-19 pandemic. The minister underlined that India has reported 1.25 million cases and over 30,000 deaths. He highlighted the fact that India has one of the lowest cases of COVID and deaths per million population.
The SCO is also known as Shanghai Pact. It was established in 2001 in Shanghai. India and Pakistan joined the SCO as the full members on June 9, 2017 at the summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Jharkhand government declared two-year jail for not wearing a mask in public
Jharkhand government pronounced two-year jail term and up to One Lakh rupee fine for not wearing a face mask in public and violating the COVID-19 protocols issued by the government. The decision came in the cabinet meeting held on July 24.
The provisions for such penalties were introduced through an ordinance named as Jharkhand Contagious Disease Ordinance 2020.
