Shiksha: Congratulations on achieving 95+ percentile in CUET UG 2023! Please tell us about yourself?
Sejal: Good afternoon ma’am, first of all, thank you so much. My name is Sejal Gupta and I hail from Delhi NCR, India. I have completed my schooling at Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Vasundhara, Ghaziabad. I had subjects of commerce stream in grade 12th which were Accountancy, Mathematics, Economics, Business Studies, and English.
From the year 2021 onwards, CUET is conducted in computer-based mode. Till 2020, the exam was conducted in paper-pencil based (PBT) mode. The exam will continue to be conducted in the computer-based mode or online mode. As per the CUET exam pattern, the exam was conducted in two to three slots, depending on the number of applications received in a subject. There were three sections on Language, Domain Subject and General Test (optional). The number of questions and marks will vary from paper to paper.
More than 200 CUET participating universities, including central, state, government, private, and deemed institutes offer admission to various undergraduate and integrated courses through Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG). Each CUET college offers the courses across Science, Humanities, Commerce, Management, Law, Engineering, and other streams. Students planning to get admission through CUET exam have to check the courses offered by their target university on their official website, NTA official website, or at Shiksha page.
Shiksha: What was your reaction after getting the CUET result 2023?
Sejal: I was quite satisfied with my raw score in the CUET exam and it is good enough for getting into the top colleges across India. But I was quite disappointed to see the huge decrease in marks after getting the normalized scores, but still, I have not lost hope.
Shiksha: What motivated you to aim for a great score in CUET 2023 exam?
Sejal: As I mentioned I come from NCR, and everyone at my school and coaching aimed to get into the best colleges in the country, especially the University of Delhi. It being such a prestigious university, we have always heard about college life at DU, from our seniors to our teachers. From being able to spend 3 precious years of my life at DU, getting a chance to study at the top colleges of the country at the undergraduate level and at the same time enjoying the campus life, attending and organizing the fests, being a member of few of the best committees out there was the motivating factor for me.
Shiksha: How did you manage your time effectively during your exam preparation? Please share preparation strategy.
Sejal: My preparation strategy was quite simple and much of my preparation was done while I was preparing for my CBSE Board Exams because the content of both the exams is similar just a few additional topics in CUET, that too from grade 11th only and some topics that were deleted from CBSE syllabus. So, the difference comes in the format of the exams, CBSE Board Exams are subjective whereas CUET is objective. Till the month of March, I focused on my board exams and followed all the instructions given by our teachers after the boards I dedicated 1.5 months to CUET, revised my notes, and practiced objective-type questions provided by my coaching institute.
To prepare well for the CUET UG and board examinations, candidates must:
- Start their preparations for CUET UG along with class 12th board examination. This will help students to cover the maximum syllabus for CUET.
- Candidates must make sure to be familiar with the CUET exam pattern and syllabus for the subjects they are planning to opt for.
- Candidates must know weak and strong topics by solving CUET mock tests or previous year question papers.
- Students must make sure to download the CUET question papers and analyse difficulty level of the exam
- Aspirants must select the best books for CUET UG preparation.
On analysing the CUET UG cut off for the academic year 2025-26, scoring above 700 marks can be considered a good score in CUET UG. Candidates scoring above 700 may fall in the category of 95+ percentile. Candidates can get admission to top central universities like University of Delhi, Banaras Hindu University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and other universities in the desired course. Given below is the range that is considered good for admission:
- Very Good Score: 700 and above
- Good Score: 650 and above
Shiksha: Can you share any challenges or obstacles you faced during your preparation and how you overcame them?
Sejal: The only challenge I faced during my preparation was to study the topics deleted from CBSE syllabus, so to cover those topics, I used to watch a YouTube video for that topic and then read that topic from NCERT and then did the back exercise questions from NCERT.

Shiksha: How did you prepare for CUET UG? Self-study or Coaching? Which method was effective for you?
Sejal: Actually, I did both. I did self-study for domain subjects and I took coaching for the General Test. I was also preparing for the IPMAT exam so, the general test was covered in that and I didn’t have to prepare for it separately. I would like to elaborate on the preparation of domain subjects here, studying sincerely for the board exams would do the trick. As I mentioned, the difference is only in the format of the two exams, so once you are thorough with the syllabus during board preparation, the only thing left is to revise it and practice as many questions as possible. I had a habit of making notes and it did wonders for me. So, while I was preparing for boards, I made notes for all the subjects and once I got over with board exams, I just revised my notes and practiced questions. I had already read NCERT quite a few times during boards so in those 1.5 months, notes proved to be very helpful.
Shiksha: Apart from your academic studies, were you involved in any extracurricular activities? How did you balance your studies and other commitments?
Sejal: I was more academically inclined in my high school. But, apart from academics, I was a member of the student council in my school and I used to help in organizing some events at school. All of that was managed within school hours only and it didn’t affect my studies as such.
Shiksha: What subjects did you find most challenging in CUET syllabus, and how did you overcome those challenges?
Sejal: The most challenging subject for me was Mathematics. Being able to solve complex and lengthy questions of integration and differentiation was a task for me. But Mathematics was an important subject for few courses that I was aiming for. So, I took the help of some of my friends at school and also consulted the Mathematics teacher at my tuition centre and she was kind enough to guide and help me at the last moment.
Shiksha: Which all universities did you apply for? What was your dream college?
Sejal: I applied for CUET admission 2023 for Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, Delhi Technological University and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University among a few others. My dream college is Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University, the best college in the country for commerce students aspiring to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) on the basis of my CUET score.
Shiksha: What advice would you give to your fellow students who aspire to achieve a high percentile in their Class 12th and CUET exam?
Sejal: The only advice that I have for the students is that class 12th and CUET is not as difficult as it appears to be. I know it can be overwhelming sometimes to be able to manage both of them at the same time. But trust me if you prepare well for grade 12th exams then preparing for CUET will become much easier for you. For boards, you just have to be thorough with the NCERT and then solve some past year papers which are really helpful and easily available online. Past-year papers are a must for every student because it helps you to acclimatize yourself with the paper pattern and you will be able to ace your board exams. Once you are done with your board exams, you get around 1.5 months to prepare for CUET, where you are already aware of the content and are just left with practice of some objective questions which you can easily find online. Lastly, just give your best shot and don’t stress too much on the results, you will also make your way like I did.
Shiksha: Lastly, do you have any other notable achievements or experiences during your high school journey that you would like to share with us?
Sejal: The notable experience for me was to be able to witness Mr. Kaspar Meyer, Cultural Attache & Head of Science and Technology at German Embassy, New Delhi at the school annual function and receiving the ‘All Rounder of the Year’ award from him.

Since the CUET UG exam is held for multiple subjects and slots, the difficulty level of the exam varies from subject to subject. Sometimes, the difficulty level may also vary for different slots. While for the well-prepared candidates, the difficulty level will be low, for the underprepared students, the level of difficulty will be on the higher side.
