IIT JAM 2026 Steps to go Through

Fill IIT JAM 2026 Application Form

IIT JAM registrations will be closed by 12th October 2026 (but may be extended). Students are advised to visit the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS) link present on the official website of the exam. And the IIT JAM 2026 online registration already started on September 5, 2025.

 Download IIT JAM Admit Card

By January 5, 2026, students will be able to download their admit card. IIT JAM 2026 admit cards will be downloaded from the official website. The last date for downloading the IIT JAM Hall Ticket 2026 is before the commencement of the examination. After downloading the admit card, candidates will have to take a print of it and carry it to the allotted exam center, along with a valid ID proof (original). Without an admit card and ID proof, candidates are forbidden to appear for IIT JAM 2026 exam.

Candidates are then required to take the IIT JAM 2026 exam at the allocated exam center. Candidates are allowed to take either one or two test papers, and those candidates choosing two test papers must ensure that both papers are scheduled for different sessions.

Verify IIT JAM Result

The IIT JAM 2026 results will be announced on the exam's official site on March 20, 2026. Candidates will receive an All India Rank (AIR) for each IIT JAM 2026 test they've taken, and the All India Merit List has been generated based on AIR. Candidates whose names or roll numbers are on the merit list will be eligible for admission to MSc programs at IITs and integrated PhD programs at IISc.

Complete the Admission Form for IIT JAM Counseling 

A qualifying candidate will need to fill out an admission form found on the official website. Regardless of whether a candidate qualifies for one or two test papers, they will only need to fill out and submit one admission form. After filling the admission form, candidates will need to pay INR 750 in the online mode via JOAPS for a processing fee. Qualifying candidates will be eligible to apply for the admission process.

Check Admission List

Upon submitting the admission form and processing fee, the admission lists will be published on the JAM 2026 official website. After the admission list has been announced, offer letters will be provided by the admitting college/ institute(s) to candidates. After a candidate has received the offer letter, the candidate needs to fill out the acceptance form along with a fee in advance for booking a seat in online mode via JOAPS.

Note: "The merit list of any test paper does not guarantee admission or provide an automatic right to admission. Admissions will be made in order of merit and otherwise depending on the number of available seats at the admitting institute(s)," states the official website. 

It may also be noted that admission for IISER Bhopal, IISER Pune, and Centralised Counselling for MSc/ MSc (Tech) of NITs (CCMN) will not be done through the common JAM admission process, states the official website.

IIT JAM has consistently been held in February, with the 2026 exam scheduled for February 15th, while the application process is there from September to October, and the results are typically announced in the month of March. The organizing institute is yearly, as seen earlier with IIT Guwahati, IIT Madras, and IIT Delhi.

Patterns & Changes Over Time 

• The examination is nearly always held in February, which provides roughly 3 - 4 months' time allowance period after registration closure before the exam takes place. 
• Registration periods are often in the timeframe of early September to mid-October. Occasionally, there is a short correction period after registration. 
• Admit cards are released roughly 1 - 1½ months in advance of the exam (January for a February exam). 
• Exam results typically arrive 4 - 6 weeks after the exam.
